Dear all,

I've seen some description about the NetRay, TCP/IP protocol Microsoft
NT-based distributed POVray program. Is the NetRay also available for
Windows98 ?

That is a product that Mikael Carneholm is working on but has not yet made
available to the public. It seems to have been in stasis for some time now
and I have not heard if he ever plans on finishing it. If you want I can
probably dig up his email address for you so you can discuss it further
with him.

BTW, is the IMP-Pov similar to this NetRay (in case this NetRay is fully
developed)? I just saw your comment about the 'Rendering in a network' thread.

Thanks,

It is similar but it is currently not avialable to the general public.
I am working on removing this restriction but have not heard back from
the people in charge of that web site yet.

Just to emphasize what's already in my .sig, I'm speaking for myself only here,
but is that a violation of this clause in POVLEGAL, or is this a separate
program that just invokes a separate copy of POV-Ray on each client machine?

Custom versions may only be distributed as freeware. You must make all of your
modifications to POV-Ray freely and publicly available with FULL SOURCE CODE
to the modified portions of POV-Ray and must freely distribute full source to
any new parts of the custom version.

As far as I know it is a complete custom compile of the program that has
added functionality. How and what it does can be answered by Nigel Stewart
who worked on most of it's implementation.

It is only unavailable to the general public because it is stored on a
password protected server - the IMP home page is for members only. Other
than that it was created under full compliance of POV-Legal. There is
no cost to download the program but to get access to it you have to join
the IMP so as to get access to the private pages.

I see no conflict here.

No conflict between "publicly available" and "available only to IMP
members"? I'm not sure I concur.

I guess it's time to ask Chris Cason for a clarification then...

The restriction is just a technical glitch. The intent is to keep that page
open, just on and off the server has been getting problems and resetting
the protections.

If it does persist, the IMP one will probably get mirrored elsewhere.

I understood from a mail message a few months ago that the password restriction
on the FTP server was there to allow people from behind firewalls to have access
to the server, apparantly there had been problems with people accessing the
server annonymously from behind fierwalls, but they could connect and u/l and
d/l when logging in as 'normal' ie with a password and login name.

Don't take this a gospel, it was a few months ago and I havn't got access to
those mail messages any more (suppose I could try as I've got the data files).

I specificaly queried the list a few months ago as to whether IMP-Pov was
going to be made public and I believe it was Nigel who told me that it
would remain in a non password protected are allowing public access. I
am sure that it is simply and oversight on the part of the web page
maintainer - who ever that is (Glen Berry ?).

The IMP is going to have to do something about it and soon. I checked with
Chris Cason and the IMP is in violation of POV-Legal by having it stored
on a password protected page. I have sent a message to the IMP mailing
list concerning this issue.

Suppose that for purely academical reasons I add some harmful code to
povray (for example direct support for crypted povray viruses in .pov files)
and give it to a friend so he can test it too. Does the povlegal require that
I make the source code public?

Warp, you have got to let go of this virus fetish of yours. I don't
think it is good for your mental health.

I think technically, yes, it does. If you "distribute" it, you must distribute
it under the provided terms; otherwise, you don't have a license to distribute
it at all. There's no rule that says you have to advertise it, though, so you
could put it on a publicly available webpage with no links to it, as long as you
provided the URL to anyone who knew to ask. For that matter, you could just
email it to anyone who wanted it, as I used to do with the superpatch source.
If nobody knows it exists, nobody will ask for it.

Again, note the disclaimer in the .sig.

The access restriction to IMP-Pov has be lifted. You can access the IMP-Pov

Or rather, the server permissions problem that accidentally blocked the page has
now been corrected.

It had also been accidentally blocking the "about this project page". That too is
now restored to proper public access.

Sorry for any inconvenience.
