I am not ready to nail Norton until I find the
mechanism but ...

    My machine was completely stable for over a year. I
installed Systemworks. An hour later the system went
down and C: drive was have trashed including windows.

    I reinstalled to D: but I had it set so C:
contained the boot record. That vanished three times.
Two weeks now and using most anything on C: caused the
trashing of something on C: and more than what is being
used.

    There is more.

    But the coincidence is striking.
