Pov-Ray is free. I could by a good used car for the price of 3D studio max.
Simple economics makes Pov-Ray much more attractive for many people and it's
output is comparable if not better in many circumstances.
Next question.

You have verified what many other people have discovered - that the
raytraced output of freeware POV-Ray can be superior to high-dollar
commercial software. Thank you for this revelation.

why in the world would you convert to pov if you can afford 3DSMAX?
doesn't that kinda defeat the purpose of using a $4k dollar program?

A couple reason for me: I write html, in note pad.. I do big pages like
that. I learn the language that way. That is good because html is almost
universal.
Pov-ray isn't universal, no but it is like html. You type it out and get a
3d image (html you get 2d)
It is great that PovRAy is free. Now I don't really care about the fact
that 3dstudio Max is more expensive, therefor making this program better,
no because if I wanted to I could go out and get 3dstudio Max by just
downloading it, or Light wave, or Bryce 3d, or adobe PhotoShop or any other
expensive graphics program.
What makes Pov-Ray really great is that because it is free, there are so
many more people on the internet willing to help and talk about it.
Pov-Ray has it's own community. People like those on this newsgroup. And
that just plain out ROCKS!.
That's why I choose Pov-Ray, because it is great and the people are great!
You won't find much better any where else.. :)

POV-Ray is not a modeler; it is a ray tracer. It is very good at what
it does: converting text input files into 2-D graphics output files.
Other programs can be used to generate text input files for POV-Ray, and
that's part of what makes POV-Ray useful. The chief usefulness of
POV-Ray - or any ray tracer - is the quality of the output it produces.
If you don't care so much about image quality, you may well want to go
with a faster method than ray tracing, regardless of your budget. If
you need the combination of modeler and high-quality renderer, it makes
sense to use an external modeler (3DS & whatever conversion software,
Moray, YourFavoriteTextEditor & graph paper, whatever) to create files
for use by POV-Ray. POV-Ray makes no claims of being a Swiss Army
knife. If you complain that POV-Ray isn't a modeler, you're right.
POV-Ray has other advantages over some other software (cost, access to
source code, cross-platform nature). That can't be said of most
modelers, with the possible exception of YourFavoriteTextEditor. Since
most modelers are not cross-platform (as they generally depend heavily
on platform-specific graphics libraries), it makes sense to have the
modelers vary with platform but have a unified cross-platform back end.
If you create a scene file for the IRTC using Moray and POV-Ray, other
people on PPC Mac's or SPARC's can render your file. That's not true of
most modelers, except when their output can be converted to POV-Ray
format. ;-)
Has anyone released a modified version of 3DS that will run on
clusters? Ray tracing as an algorithm is well suited to parallel
architecture. Modelers can better use pipelined graphics hardware that
POV-Ray can't. Yet another reason to separate renderers and modelers.
If you want a modeler that shares the advantages of POV-Ray of cost,
access to source code, and cross-platform nature (pick as many of those
as you like to consider important), you might offer to help with any one
of the ongoing 3-D modeler projects out there. I'm sure Ken has some
links. ;-)

I do indeed in the under development section of my links collection. Many

But lets be honest about it. If one acquires a good used car in
the manner most people have acquired 3DStudio it can usually be
plea-bargained down to a Class A misdemeanor for a first offense.

As someone already answered, you are a little bit confused.
It's like saying "why do you use paper when it's much more easy to write
with a pencil?". It doesn't make sense.
They are different tools. You can write _with_ a pencil and you can
write _on_ paper. You can't write _with_ a paper or _on_ a pencil (well,
strictly speaking you can, but it's not very normal...).
You can't compare 3DStudio and POV-Ray as a modeller because POV-Ray is
not a modeller. It's like comparing the pencil and the paper as an instrument
which is used to write.
If you had compared, for example, 3DStudio and Moray, that would have been
more reasonable.

I KNOW! I want to design (if possible - many are unsupported like cubic and

translate it into Pov-ray and RENDER it on Pov-ray

if you want just a modler you should try Rhino
it has a lot of professional modeling cababilites they use in manufactoring and
even somethings 3dsmax doesn't have. also it's about $200 for the student
version (that's me)
rhino can't do anything other then basic rendering, like some really basic
textures and stuff but it's designed as a modler not modler+render like 3dsmax
and who said something bout downloading 3dsmax or lightwave?
I checked both 3ds's page and lightwaves and I never saw a downloadable version
of course if your talking pirating, well um yea go ahead and do that I guess if
you want
anyway, web page for rhino is
http://www.rhino3d.com
and rhino has direct export to pov-ray files, also BMRT, dxf, obj, just about
every format there is
actully I'm considering buying rhino to use with pov, cept I think rhino might
be a tad more complicated then what I need, hehe!!

Which has what to do with 3DS Max and/or POV-Ray again? If
you dislike Billgatus of Borg so strongly, why are you even

But if you copy Micros~1 software, you're suggesting that it's actually
worth using! I wouldn't want to give anyone that impression. The best
way to move Bill Gates into a cardboard box in a back alley in Redmond
is to demonstrate that you wouldn't use his software even if it were
free.
Of course, I may be biased. ;-)

Don't flatter yourself. In this group there's also a rather long thread about
"POVray Bücher" and in the other POV-groups you may find some other (really)
interesting threads.

Remove the plug-ins. Most are not anything great, anyway. Take Shockwave,
for instance. Nice eye candy but doesn't do much, IMO.
You *can* avoid using Microsoft-based software, if that's your goal. Get a
Linux box.

You might devote your energy into something more constructive than
promoting software piracy, Eitan.
Piracy is stealing, plain and simple. If someone we know gives us a copy
of software that is for another end-user then we both become thieves. Resist
the temptation to do so. Don't use the excuse that you are battling
Microsoft because that's no reason at all for stealing.
Piracy achieves one goal - it makes legitimate software buyers like the
rest of us, pay more for the software in the long run. We end up subsidizing
those who steal.

I agree.... I hate pirates!
I am a software develope myself... (simple databases for accounting
purposes....and also play around with POVray in my spare time..dreaming to
be a great POVray artist one day)..... and I wouldn't like pirates take all
the loot for the hard earned work I did. Which is why I would never pirate
someone elses programs!
Same thing with Gates. Love him or Hate him.. Bill Gates is a better
marketeer.
I have WIN95 on my system at home... (preinstalled in the HP system I
bought)... and that is only only MS system you'll find there. I downloaded
STarOffice which is free... and use POVray a lot. My company had developed a
2D image viewer (as part of a larger bundle) which I use often. And I use
Netscape at home.. which fortunately is free also. And I use MS-Netmeeting a
lot to talk with my cousins who are in different part of the world. I also
have sPatch and I have registered my copy of WinZIP (very usefull at home).
And for games... I have only purchased MS Flight SIm 98... costed me BD 25
(USD 75 something)
If you hate Bill Gates... don't use his software. Not that I like him.. but
I do respect him. And Linux still has a lot to go thru before it can take
over MS WIndows.
If you don't wanna pay much... I am sure there are many freeware/shareware
programs out there. I will be registering for Moray soon (once I find time
to download it) and IF in the near future POVray developers ask for funds or
something... I'll probably pay them (even if it is a little)... since povray
has brought a lot of pleasure to me.
I am not rich to spend BD 10,000 (USD 4000) on 3D Studio Max (on something I
probable will never master - so I'll never buy it, pirate it or even try to
use it - untill they make one version freeware or shareware for a few 10s of
dollars).... And I would probably never even master POVray... but I do like
it because it is fun...raytracing.. changing the scene a bit...raytracing
again...changing a bit...raytracing again....
Well, Just because Povray is free it doesn't mean we should become pirates.
Has anyone spend time to read the "Disclaimer Note" when you run Povray for
Windows? I honestly haven't but I sure will and stick by those rules so that
POVray remains free for ever.

And it's possible that Eitan might have meant something else. To me, it
didn't look like he was trying to say that HE pirated it, just kinda set up
a scenario. I could be wrong, though.

I know a lot of people running Linux, and I will too If windoze 98 screws up

The only reason Windows is the main operation system, is that it comes with
any new machine..

5th in 3mon? How about reinstalling 98 once a week for the last three weeks?
Just downloaded Redhat 6.1 image and have the install disk burned. Real soon
now.
Not griping at all just the state of my art.

Whoa! That's a bit over the top. Are you sure it's a Windows problem, as opposed

My current Win 98 session has been running 342 hr. 42 min. without
a single reboot, GPF, or BSOD.
You guys sure you know how to run a computer ?

I thought it was par for the course to reboot once in awhile :-)
Last time was yesterday, time before that may have been a couple weeks ago. I
don't think of it as Win98 as much as I do the stuff I have plugged into my PC
and the stuff that's running on it. The software I install can be pretty
archaic sometimes.
However, it would be nice to not have to push the warm-boot button at all... but
isn't Linux just pushing it for you? That's sort of what I hear is the idea
anyway.

Moving over to Linux isn't something that should be done lightly, though for
me it's been a great learning experience, and I wouldn't go back Microsoft.
Matt it sounds like a hardware problem, IDE controler or even the fan cutting
out and causing the machine to do all sorts of things that it wouldn't normally
do, or something of that nature.

Ever changed an IP, tweaked your AGP, changed the MTU, installed and
configured a firewall...? The default options in Windows are so
alfully dreadfully moronically set up that a 50% decrease from optimal
performance should make you feel lucky. As an example, the default
configuration of my network card has the MTU screwed up and as a
result the maximum transer over my 100 Mbps lan was 7.1 K. Yes,
kilobytes! The AGP was automatically set to 1x, most of the functions
of the 3D accelerator were disabled... It was stable that way, but
now, more than 250 reboots later, performance has more than doubled.
>My current Win 98 session has been running 342 hr. 42 min. without

My old Win machine, K6/193, 32 RAM, 1.2 HDD, 2 MB S3 ViRGE suffered
from two or three freezings or BSODs a day, not counting GPFs and app
freezings which didn't take the system down. The *exact same box* has
been running Linux for over a month now and has only been rebooted to
add hardware (physically, because changing the default network card or
installing/uninstalling "drivers" for existing hardware do not need a
reboot).
I *know* how to use a computer but Windows does not.

Get a TV-card, run the tv program, open a dos-window and make it fullscreen.
Win98 will hang so badly that only turning off the computer and turning it
on again will help (even the reset button will not help).
I sometimes forget this and it happens every time.

Why don't you folks use Windows NT, as I do?
Machine: Dual Pentium 200 MMX, 96MB RAM,
current uptime: 1738,5 hours. Yes, that's
two and a half months.

This should perhaps go to o-t, but as an NT user, do you have also a process
running called 'Liccheck.exe' that slowly, with time, is taking up more and
more memory? At present it claims more than 19000 kB and it can't be
closed... What is it, What does it, do you know?

Two reasons:
1. NT is a LOT more expensive than win98.
2. I think that most games do not work in NT.

NT? No Thanks! The one and only time I had that beast on my machine it
successfully killed more than a month's work in terms of term

Do you think, by any chance, that I play games with an
200 MMX (apart from playing Galaga with Mame32...)?
I don't even have a 3D Graphics card (I own a
Spea Mirage P64 PCI).

Huh? I installed NT (I think) three years ago, after my Win95 had
destroyed itself for the umpteenth time. I did _one_ (1!) reinstall
during that period.

For no apparent reason NT started believing it was a remote
installation or something and kept trying to connect to itself. The
result was that it took 30 min to display the logon screen, then about
2 minutes for each icon on the desktop, another 15 min. after
ctrl-alt-del to display the task manager, and it took it ~10 more
minutes after I tried to close the network server to inform me that
"The server is too busy to complete the requested task". For obvious
reasons I had to reformat the hard drive (my BIOS did not support
CD-Rom boot) and lose all work from the last month or so. I did not
lose any POV or 2D artwork because this happened at the end of the
semester and I was too busy with school work, but I did lose all term
projects, lab reports etc. for that semester. Cost me a week of
insomnia (a total of ~10 hr of sleep in 7 days) and an an arhythmia as
a result from that. Windows NT? No Thanks.

Well, the license fee is a factor for some. Another big reason is that
it is such a resource hog. For me, it's just not stable enought for
multimedia work. I used to have a dual 333 at work with NT 4, and if I'd
push the video too much (Java 2, MPEG playback, etc.) it would instantly
freeze the machine without even a BSOD. Plus I'd have to reboot every
few days to reclaim memory. Plus that NTFS once it gets fragmented will
start eating up the HD space for it's replacement for the FAT (forget
what it was called off hand). And the HD became even too fragmented to
defragment...
If you get a good NT configuration, all is well. But if not...
With Linux, my one box here at home had a 180 day uptime. Yes, that's
half a year. And the only reason it came down was becuase we had a short
blackout here and I don't have it on a UPS.
At work I've had to shut down Linux and/or Sun workstations to move
them. That's about it. My NT boxes on the other hand...
Anyway, that was all to answer your question of why I'm not running NT.
