Hi:

As you probably guessed, I am a newuser of Povray.

I am trying to find a tool that will allow me to do some simple animation
for a game I am working on.

I have read that Povray is really not good for building that sort of
animation. Is that true? If so, can anyone suggest an inexpensive
alternative? I cant afford most of the mainstream tools. (Alias, etc.)

Thanks,
Michael

Go to http://www.irtc.org and to the animation competition section, see
the animations made with povray and judge by yourself.

You can do all kinds animations with POV, but it's difficult. Everything has
to be hand-coded. In my opinion POV is more suitable for rendering stills
(although excellent animations have been made). I don't know of any
inexpensive/free alternatives, though.

That depends. If you want real-time animation, forget POV immediately. If
you need start-up screens or other pre-rendered animations, lots of things
are possible in POV-Ray, but like Margus and Nieminen said, it's a lot of
hand-coding to do. Also you need a good understanding of the (simple)
geometry involved to move things around.

It depends on what you need to do. If you just need to do mechanical
animation then you could probably do it with POV.

If you're looking to do character animation, I recommend Animation
Master. It costs around $200 and is designed specifically for
animation. The homepage is www.hash.com.

You could even render scenes in POV and then composite them into Hash.
