Yes, actually there is an easy way to do it. I have once
done a cupboard this way [dig...dig...dig]
Look up "Repeat Warp" in the 3.1beta help under:
Scene Description Language/Textures/Pattern Modifiers/Warps
There is an example of using it for a panelled wood texture.
