http://www.allegorithmic.com got some good press at the latest Siggraph '03.
Their yet-to-be released algorithmic mapping software sounds intriguing; in
the meantime, they have some very useful 2Kx2K 256-greyscale 'algorithmic
maps' available for free download -- and a contest, too.  They make a nice
mention of POV-Ray (and a nice screen shot as attached jpg shows...

If you're interested in this sort of thing you might like to have a look
at planetGenesis, http://planetgenesis.sf.net a small Java application.

I would like to add that this is blatant self promotion
