I'm a complete newbie when it comes to POVray and need some help
configuring and using it.
I'm on a Powerbook G4 (1.67GHz) running MacOS 10.4.10.
I've installed POVray 3.6.
I barely know what POVray is (excuse my ignorance), but have an interest
in it because of "Eagle 3D" which is a script that produces a .POV file
out of an electronic circuit board design.
The POV file is then (as far as I know) run through POVray to create a
3-dimensional drawing of the actual circuit board.

What I've done so far is download the installation files from the above
site, the direct file-link being:

And then I placed the ULP (script file) where my electronic design
application; Eagle (http://www.cadsoft.de/) can find it.
However, when it comes to POVray and how to treat the Eagle-generated
.POV file I'm totally lost.
I've so far double-clicked the POV file which loaded it into POVray, and
following that I assumed that I should just go to the "Render" menu and
choose to render this file. Well, I seemed to have gotten several error
messages.
Upon contacting the author of Eagle 3D I was told that I need to tell
POVray the location of a specific folder which came with Eagle 3D.
However, I don't see any way of configuring this in POVray.
A folder named "POVray" comes with Eagle 3D which contains the following
files:

I tried placing all those files in POVray's "include" folder, but I'm
still getting error messages when I try to render the POV file, so I
assume I have to place them somewhere else or I'm not understanding how
to use POVray properly.

Welcome Tiger,
instructions. The error message you got tells you that there is a file that
cannot be found (tools.inc) and you should enter a search path into, what in
windows is POVRAY.INI. The documentation should tell you what to do. Or you
could put tools.inc in the same folder as the Pov file, that should work
too.
Do try and take some time to learn a bit about Pov-Ray in its own right
before you start using it as a render engine, it might not be what you
expect. To get good quality images you will need to understand how Pov-Ray
works.
WARNING Pov-Ray can be addictive :-)

Thanks. Now *something* is happening instead of that error message,
which isn't necessarily a good thing.
Instead, the Mac "beachball" spins indefinitely. By pressing ALT-COMMAND
I can see that POVray is "not responding", so I had to do a "force quit".
This seems to happen every time I run it, and the file I've given to it
is a very small one as well (I just placed one small IC on a board, so I
can't possibly think POVray would see it as a major task; the whole POV
file is 399 lines long).
Then I tried it in another application which I found called MegaPOV it
seemed to work better, but even after setting the path to those files
(in the "Files & paths" section of preferences) I got an error message:
Parse Error: Illegal character in input file, value is 02.
Total Scene Processing Times
Parse Time: 0 hours 0 minutes 0 seconds (0 seconds)
Photon Time: 0 hours 0 minutes 0 seconds (0 seconds)

What it means is that there is an error in the input, and the rendering
can't continue until it is fixed.
Unfortunately you have not included the portion of the error message which
immediately precedes what you posted. You need to get the information which
will tell you the "File:" and provide (5 lines) of "File Context." From
there, you can figure out what file is causing the problem - and possibly
correct it.
From what is displayed, I'd guess that an ASCII "02" character has somehow
gotten into the file you're using, and that is causing problems. I have
seen similar bad problems (including crashing MegaPOV) when ^C and other
non-printable made it into some SDL files I was using.
Hopefully this helps you out at least some.

I've been in touch with the author and sent him the complete error
messages. I believe he's got it under control, but will have to wait for
the next version of Eagle 3D before I can actually test it.

Hallo
unfortunately also with my Setup:
Intel Xeon 2.66 Quad Core (2009 Model) 8GB Ram MacOs 10.6.5,
there are some Problems as follow:
"Possible Parse Error: Cannot find file 'tools.inc', even after trying to append
file type extension.
line 117: Parse Error: Cannot open include file tools.inc."
with the Macintosh Version of PovRay 3.7 unofficial beta39;
...pov file was created with Eagle 3D v.1.0.5 and Eagle 5.11.0
no change still no rendering with Eagle 3D(of the Mac Platform)
Id would be great, if somebody has any Idea what i do wrong.

..........ok now i puted all .inc - Files on the right place and sayed this
the Programm in the Files & Path Preferences and it going on, but
now i get this:
"POV-Ray 3.7 64bit Unofficial/include/glass_old.inc" line 79: Parse Error:
Expected '=', , found instead
Render failed"
by the way in both Versions MegPov and the PovRay 3.7 Unofficial the same
Effect.
what should i do? The = was already there.
