I didn't expect such a fast response. I thought any response would come
on Monday or so.
Again, thank you.
Alberto.

Well, we planned to make a Mac 3.1g.r1 anyway, just not right now, but as
the only thing we still had to do was to pack it, so it was no problem to
react that fast also we did not expect this bug :-(
I have uploaded a fixed 3.1g.r1 PPC update archive. You can already get it
by direct access to:
<http://mac.povray.org/archives/povpmac_update.hqx>
There is also a new feature in the PPC version which will speed up rendering
significantly. It hasn't been documented yet, but don't worry about that.
The only other difference between 3.1g and 3.1g.r1 will be that your
application preferences will be lost and you have to set them again - sorry.
And the beta timeout bug is fixed, of course :-)

Thorsten: Has the source code been made available yet? I would like to
update my patch as soon as possible.

No, that will take at least until September (for various personal/timing
reasons). Sorry.

It's always a joy to see some improvements :-).
In the status windows now I can see
POV-Ray Mac Memory Cache Statistics
I look forward to the documentation.
Alberto.

:-(
That means I will have to read about all these improvements, and won't
be able to use them. What is this speed improvement feature?

It is a kind of "cache" when allocating lots of small blocks of memory
(which POV-Ray does very often). Try it and you will see the difference with
almost any scene. Try for example pyramid2.pov from the macro examples that
come with POV-Ray, and look especially at the parsing time. Renbdering is
fast also, but this example shows the improvement very drastically.

Sounds interesting. By the way, how could I get started beta testing for
POV-Ray Mac, now that the CompuServe forum is history?

Oh, yes, I saw your question by e-mail as well. I am very sorry, but I
haven't had the time to reply to any mac### [at] povrayorg e-mail from the
past 10 days yet.
3.5 is far from beta test state, and by the time it is, we will be have
worked out something regarding a beta test. Sorry, I can't say more yet as
I don't know what and when we will do what yet, it still has to be decided
:-)

Sounds neat, but you say this is only on the PPC version. Is there some
reason why it's not implemented for the 68k version? Lack of test
equipment? Missing hardware? I know there's not too much of us left, but
we need the speedup more than anyone. ;_;
If it's just a matter of lacking testing equipment, then would you
consider tossing it in as an "experimental hack" and letting us tell you
whether it works or not?
