More than 2 1/1 months ago I posted the question if anybody knows of a
useful height-field-editor for our favourite platform, but there was not
even one single answer. Did my message not get posted here or is there
really none?

There is no explicit editor I am aware of. I usually use PhotoShop (you can
even use a Trial version of it and make screenshots), it works well for
making all kinds of heigh-fields. Making a moon landscape using lens flare
for example is easy: create it as rgb image and the use some bevel effect
and then change it to grayscale. Depending on what you need the field for
you can reuse the other effect plug-ins as well.

I have used Photoshop and Bryce to generate height fields... it can also be
done natively in POV-Ray:

I had a smaller utility that I used for one image, but I can't seem to find
it anymore...
