There's a Telegram Russian channel with 3 members. I just checked
Channels are not longer possible on Telegram, unless you pay probably,
so I'm not creating 1

Okay, so why couldn't we have a POV-Ray discord server? Ya'll talk about black
holes but there is an IRC still why? Retro doesn't mean hindering yourself and
the community on purpose. You know what does create a black hole of knowledge?
Less accessible information. Answers that you have to wait for and might forget
or give up on.

I have only ever once used a Discord server (very briefly) so I don't know what
the advantages or disadvantages of that sort of thing are.

Aside from web-based services, the only 3rd-party thing I use is Telegram.

Concerning development of POV-Ray 4.0 / SDL 2.0, some of us have put forth the
possibility of using some sort of Project Management software in order to
organize and keep track of feature requests and progress on implementing key
tasks, as well as making sure that the time someone volunteers to work on
solutions can be chosen to be the most efficient by working on the highest
priority items.

I suggested doing this using Fossil, but that didn't seem to take off.

I don't have a server, and like I said, I don't know anything about Discord -
but if you or anyone you know can set one up, I would be more than happy to
create an account and see how it works.

I feel the same. A lot of projects seem to be happy to go to a black hole rather than
maintain a searchable presence. While it's probably fair to say that it takes a lot
more work to set up and maintain your own forums than it does to just get free hosting
from discord. But even that bar is being overtaken (slowly) as places like GitHub
improve their discussions experience.

TL;DR I believe strongly in keeping support-related conversations available for future
users to find, rather than discover DenverCoder9 moved to Discord.

https://plane.so is an open-source project management tool that can be self-hosted or
run in the cloud. We've (day job) been looking at it as our current solution, Pivotal
Tracker, is shutting down (purchased by Broadcom).

However honestly I think a project management tool like any of these is probably
overkill - unless someone is willing to be project manager and chief cat herder.

I've got a number of personal goals for 4.0 but none of them really require anything
outside of what github supplies.

In case some readers are not aware, we do have a group specifically for off-topic
random chat (povray.off-topic).

If anyone really wants real-time communication (and given the dearth of users in the
IRC channel, I think not too many) then it should be something standards-based and
perhaps a little less arcane than IRC. A standard like XMPP for example (supported by
Thunderbird for those who use it). I already have Trillian so I use that instead.
There's dozens of XMPP-compatible clients out there.

FWIW we do have an experimental XMPP service (xmpp.povray.org) but it's only used by
myself and one other user, mainly as a convenience for myself. Not really intending to
do much more with it but if there was interest I suppose I could allow more accounts.

Well that is excellent. I created a #pov-ray forum channel at
https://discord.gg/r7kHDx9Pmn . I think a Workflowy might be a more modern way
of doing something like Fossil, with all the modern features we'd need.
Basically it's an infinite outliner with image and tagging and focus mode
features.

If we went any further I'd suggest a Trello. I've set up everything from
SaleForce to Adobe WorkFront for clients. So I'd be happy to help with that
part. I real just want to help empower people to find answers even easier,
including for myself. How I have wished to meet a friend into POV-Ray.

TLDR: LiberaChat #povray channel does exist.

.....And reading this discussion reminded me how long I had forgotten to connect
to the Liberachat and say hi ! to people who have always been there for years
and did always answer ! Thank you tTh and KurtzLePirate !

I'm sure 00face and Saul Luizaga didn't mean to really insult people and just
spoke from a passionate perspective, we probably all felt it, end I'm proud of
being part of this community which was able to receive a little friendly rant,
without escalating to hostility.

The point they made is that maybe some people especially beginners prefer to
chat more informally before posting stuff on such a well archived and searchable
place as here.

Also existing are...
2 Facebook groups, a continuous Mastodon hashtag activity, Blenderartists.org
povray tag ... But yes none of this is real time... (except there's messenger
on FB but it's too private and suffers the same issue of data exploitation as
Discord and Telegram)

The point to be made is that if people don't answer faster, it's because they
can't, (and might even refrain from joining such channels for that reason)
.....unless you (the faster-moving ones) do answer to those in demand. Thanks for
this important contribution ! ;-)

* Liberachat IRC is not that bad of a start ! And the good thing is you don't
have to choose, you can use all of the mentioned networks ! Since I joined one
of the facebook group (Persistence of Vision ...Forever), it went from 4 to 69
persons! and Fans of POV-Ray has been around the current 232 for longer.

For years I tried not to be too far from where the POV "crowd" could federate,
and it did come along by and by, we can count on about a hundred persons on any
of these currently (the same people). So indeed your endeavor to reach more
can't hurt ! (just be aware of the flaws of such a platform, making it a
potentially less appreciated tool from people like us) I am going to join your
discord, but of course since I don't trust discord at all, it may very well
never get to be my favorite solution as happened in the past!
