First, nice to be in touch again -   never intended to be gone for so long.
(As anyone who might remember me has probably already figured out, "The Elder
Mike" is the same person as "Mike the Elder" - I just needed a new account
because I no longer have access to the email account for the old one)

Second, my old computer died on Thanksgiving day and I had to grab a quick
replacement on Black Friday. I ended up with a Windows 8 machine, which I am
*NOT* thrilled about.  Now that I have this thing, I need to know which version
(if any) of POV-Ray will work reliably on it.  Can I use the 64 bit version?

Unless they did some surprising changes (uh, wait... we're talking about 
Windows 8, right? >_<) the regular POV-Ray for Windows binaries should 
do the job, but whether it'll be 32 or 64 bit depends on the CPU of 
course: If it's a 64-bit one (which I'd consider very likely these 
days), you should be fine with the 64-bit POV-Ray version (presuming 
that the installed Windows 8 version matches the CPU); otherwise the 
32-bit version will have to do.

I have read somewhere that you can bring back the Win 7 desktop 
appearance again if you are not satisfied with the Win 8 look ;-)

Since I wouldn't feel right about feeling sorry for myself given that the injury
was largely self-inflicted, your sympathy is gratefully accepted.

....and thanks (to all) for the help.  It is a 64 bit machine (i5-2320, 8GB ram,
1TB hard drive) not so bad for a machine grabbed quickly and on the cheap from a
"big-box" retailer shelf. Only the Win 8 aspect is objectionable so far... &
I'll have to learn the silly thing for the benefit of clients sooner or later,
so why not now?

Knowing that Win 8 was built for the smartphones and such, the desktop 
seems understandable. On a PC or laptop however, one seems to be thrown 
back into kindergarten. Totally irrelevant for those hardware. I don't 
know about pros or cons of Win 8 but at least the desktop view needs 
clearly be an option. Not the place for /that/ discussion here though.;-)

there is supposed to be a "classic mode" in windows 8, but (i've heard) it nerfs
functionality.  I've also seen complaints that M$ isn't providing a full api to
3rd party developers like Mozilla, so firefox will only run in classic, while
only IE will run in Metro.

Typical M$ BS...

I do all my pov work in linux anyway: I like the command line.

When I bought a WinXP computer, the first thing I did was switch the desktop to
the Win95 look.  When I upgraded to Win7, the first thing I did was switch the
desktop to the Win95 look.  Still, a pig wearing lipstick is still a pig, and
after 6 months of losing irreplaceable brain cells, I said kcuf it and switched
to Linux.  I don't even want to think about what Win8 looks like, or what
"helpful" features it has.

Don't all applications run under the "classic" Win 7 desktop, unless 
they have been specifically written to take advantage of Metro? I highly 
suspect POV falls into the former category :-)

IMO the new Metro GUI only makes sense if you have a multi-touch screen.
