As I get deeper into POV-Ray animation--while naturally wanting to show off my
results to the POV-Ray community--it's getting more and more difficult to
compress the file size under the 700K limit imposed at p.b.animations, without
sacrificing a great deal of the image quality. (And I'm talking about a
ten-second animation at most.) Yes, I suppose I could start a Youtube acount
and post them there (or start my own website), but I'd rather not upload my
stuff onto Youtube; and I haven't gotten around to creating my own site (am I
the only one left??)

An increase to, say, 5MB to 10 MB would allow a *much* nicer animation to be
posted, without unduly stuffing the newsgroup hard drives.

I realize there must be a reason for the limit--either due to limited hard disk
space or the bandwidth of the POV-Ray server(s)' upload/download link. If it's
just a lack of available disk space, I for one would be willing to purchase a
new drive for the newsgroups. (A genuine offer, BTW.)

Anyway, I wanted to throw this question out there to see what others might have
to say on the topic.

Ken W.

I'm not sure what the situation is bandwidth-wise but I do know the system is
based on a pair of 500-gig drives backed up to the older 320. And I have no
idea how much space all the history consumes. I'd still be willing to
contribute to upping the bandwidth if needed. I'd like to see more animations
on here :)

PS, no you're not the only one who hasn't set up a web page and isn't keen on
posting to youtube.

I think we can do this, we have new hard drives (thanks to the folks who
purchased them for us, whoever you are!). I probably ought to review the limits
on everything actually.

I might add that Youtube re-encodes files after uploading, and video
quality usually suffers noticeably.

Youtube is great for sharing your family outings; it sucks for showing
the finer details of your new textures.

[ISO 9660] Years begin to count at 1900, which means that CD-ROMs will
suffer from a Y2156 problem because the year following 2155 will be
1900. This problem could have been delayed by defining the origin time
to be 1988 (the year the standard was adopted). Had that been done, the
problem would have been postponed until 2244. Every 88 extra years helps.

The limit should now be 5000k. I haven't tested it (though I am sure
someone will:)

Remember that the server has to convert the file to uucoded text, so the
file size on the server likely will be larger than on disk.
