This is probably an *old* question, but I haven't been able to find an answer
yet...

v3.6.1c (on Windows, at least) has an undocumented(?) file output type, J for
jpeg. It works, but the resulting saved image is very heavily compressed. Out
of dumb curiosity, to possibly get a higher quality I tried adding a number
after J, like J10. No change, although it still renders. I'm wondering if there
*is* a likewise-undocumented jpeg quality-setting that can be added somehow?

Not that I plan on *using* jpeg output very much (maybe just for uploading
images to the newsgroups.) Just a question of curiosity.

Something I did notice, though: When I run an animation sequence using jpeg
output--and stop the animation process somewhere other than at the end--POV-Ray
completely shuts down and closes! (Doesn't happen with .bmp or .png output.) I
realize this is a bug of some sort--but feel badly about reporting it as such,
since the feature seems to be undocumented anyway.

BTW, there's a really interesting old newsgroup thread that discusses the pros
and cons of *officially* adding jpeg output to POV. Worth a read...
