<meta http-equiv="refresh" content="600">
my workflow is typically I will open a lot of tabs in opera or firefox, and
recently I noticed, leaving a few povray forum window (for referencing)
will consume my network bandwidth as a bunch of them trying to pull the
same forum messages every 10 other minutes. This generate loads on the
server, on my end, and using up bandwidth for no reason and is uncalled
for.
Is there way to to disable this feature in the browser?
I think this might be a possible reason why the forum can be slow in loading
some of the time.
I just save a random forum with 10messages, the size surprised me, 112KB.
and I am pulling 112KB*6=672KB every hour just by the leaving the tab
there.

In Firefox, you can install the "Web Developer" addon; there's an option
under the "Disable" menu to disable meta redirects, which *should* also
work for the refresh (which is basically a self-redirection).

Go to <http://news.povray.org/mynews/> and change the "Automatic View
Update" setting.

No, the forum isn't slow loading because of server load. It loads as fast as
your connection permits - the povray.org server has more than enough
resources to provide the forum within a fraction of a second *if* your
connection permits (unless you load without taking time to read so many
messages per second that you hit our anti-email-address harvesting safeguards).

it is probably my connection problem. Will I hit the anti-email if I like
open a group, then open like 5-10 threads. (it loads slowly on myside, so
what I do is look through the list, and open them first, then slowly read
through each of the tabs.

What it does is simply wait for a few seconds _before_ serving the page
(just the page, not i.e. images in the binaries groups) if you requested
several pages in a very short period of time (a matter of seconds). The
purpose is to slow down bots crawling the pages for email addresses or
someone trying to mirror the server.

BTW, you may consider using a real newsreader rather than the newsgroup web
interface if you have a slow connection. Newsreaders can download messages
more conveniently. A tutorial is available for Outlook Express *, but you
can of course use any other newsreader software (i.e. Mozilla Thunderbird
also includes a newsreader). Just point your newsreader of choice to
<news://news.povray.org/> and you are done.

A great advantage of using a newsreader, is that you can attach more than one
image or attachment to a particular post in the binaries groups.
It's also a snap to sort by thread, date, subject, sender, or size.
