I have two computers on which I use POV.

On the first, I can't consistently get the color-coding. Sometimes my
scene-description files are color-coded, and other times not.

On the other, if I type too fast in the editor, it will freeze for about
five seconds (even other applications running at the time are affected),
and then the text will appear. It's not a slow computer, and I had POV on
it before and it didn't do that.

I doubt this is a bug with the program--I'm figuring that I've got some
setting set wrong. Anybody know what's wrong?

Hit Alt+Enter and set the language to POV-Ray. I usually have to do that
whenever I start a new file from scratch, but it occurs sometimes when I
open a file as well.

No idea on this problem. Is it actually POV-Ray thats causing it, or
might your entire PC freeze for a few seconds, but its just noticeable
in POV-Ray? Check on that before you blame POV-Ray. ;-)

Tim

Thanks! Didn't realize that had to be set.

I'm not blaming POV. I was just hoping maybe somebody knew why that was
happening.

ObMicrosoftSlam:

If you're running Windows, the chances are *nobody* knows why it's
happening.

OK, I got that to work for myself but it ONLY works if I use the LEFT-ALT
key!

I did not know that the editor's syntax highlighting could be set for
different languages. I wonder why they included this feature? I guess
it's handy if you use a lot of command-line compilers/tools and POV's
editor is your favorite.

I too have noticed that when I create a new file there is often no
highlighting and I usually have to close and reopen it. Thanks for the
tip.

Yeah, ain't that the truth. I might add that a lot of other Windows
Programs exhibit similar behavior, for example MS-WORD (Blargh!).
If this problem is consistent, take note if is happening in other editors as
well.
That might give you a clue.

If you're running win-XP with less than 256mb RAM, it could be
page-swapping.

In Windows, when you start a file dfrom scratch, the editor doesn't know
what type of file you are creating (.pov, .ini, etc) so there is no syntax
highlighting. Once you have saved the fiel it highlights it according tho
the file type.

When you save a new file with "Save As," you get color-coding; when you
save it just with "Save," you don't. So, the first time you save a new
file, use "Save As."

sounds very familiar. Can't remember how I fixed it though, but I think someone
here helped me, so maybe I can search for it...

been searching for some hours now, but I can't find it :(

sorry, can't help you apparently, but I'm quite sure in my case it was a problem
with a setting, somewhere

The sporadic freezing in windows if often caused by threads conflicts. Most of
the time, it's thread A that have to wait for thread B to stop, whitch in turn
is waiting for thread A to end or release some shared resource.
