Hello all!

I had the luck to have an extra income, and I am wondering about acquiring a
new machine, probably a laptop. Looking about current offers, I got lost.
Which OS, which processor? Vista frightens me a little but the machine will
also have a family usage and versions of POV are first released on Windows.
However I feel attracted by MAC OS, and Linux corresponds better to my
personnal ideas.

I do not want to restart a polemics about OSes and processors. But I'd like
to have non commercial info about the marketplace today and about
performance of POV on the last generation of processors. Did somebody try
(eg benchmark.pov?) a Core2Duo T7xxx or T5xxx? What about AMD today?

Hi Bruno,

have you considered buying one of those new Intel-based Macs? They run MacOS
X, which is based on BSD Unix, and you can install Windows, too. There ARE a
few problems with some programs written and compiled for PPC-Macs, and sadly
POV-Ray is on that list. But there is a new compile of MegaPOV, which works
fine - or so they say. For me it's all 3rd hand knowledge, I've got an old
G4 Mac (350MHz) which got updated to OS X just this weekend :-)

But there are other people here who tried Intel-based Macs, see
http://news.povray.org/povray.macintosh/
especially Yvo Smellenbergh's post on universal binary:
http://news.povray.org/povray.macintosh/thread/%3C1ho6ayc.2j0xey1lhlo00N%25yvo.s%40gmx.net%3E/

Whatever you buy: Happy Raytracing!

Karl

I can't comment on its relative rendering speed but I've been perfectly
happy with MegaPOV 1.21 under MacOS X on an Intel MacBook (I expect the
PowerBook has more, er, power). The most recent version of Daz|Studio even
runs on it now, although sadly it's over to Windows and back for Poseray
(hint! hint!).

Do you REALY need a laptop? For a given price tag, a desktop will give you beter
performances. You also can upgrade it easier and cheaper.
For the CPU, the core2duo is currently the top dog.
I can't say anything about the OS.

I already have a desktop (ACER T130 with Athlon 3000+ and 1GB) and upgrading
it today would be worthless in my opinion. I often move from one place to
another, I go on holidays from time to time, so a laptop is the best
solution.

Reading the press and forums, I seems indeed that Core2Duo is THE processor
of the time. Does someone have an idea of the performances? AFAIK, my Atlon
3000+ renders benchmark.pov in about 34 min at 512*384, and the basic scene
of the insert menu renders at the rate of 240400 PPS at 800*600. Are the 2
MB extra L2 cache of T7xxx series worth the extra money towards the T5xxx
series?

However, I still wonder if I should buy a high-end machine now so that it is
still OK within 2 years, or should I buy a middle/low end machine (yet far
better than my Athlon 3000), and wait until quad procs are on the market
and working fine (idem with OSes).

So I need to have some opinions to make up my mind, and yours is the best,
my friends!

    Bruno

Good reason.

There is a saying: it's never the right time to buy a computer! There always
will be something beter around the corner.
Personaly, I'd go for a uper middle end machine: good performances for a
relatively reasonable price.
When I mentioned upgrading, I was thinking about adding some more memory,
another HDD, swaping a video card more to your liking or needs (kids will want
to use it for the latest game ;-) not changing the CPU, as newer one may no
longer fit your socket.
When buying, look to get as much RAM as possible, it greatly help when rendering
complexe scenes with 1000's of objects, as it can pervent using the swap file.
