I'm having quite a difficult time figuring out how to subscribe to
news://news.povray.org/ with the newsreader PAN.
A snippet from the log file:
Thu, 18 Jan 2007 12:21:56 - NNTP handshake failed: Error reading from
socket.
Thu, 18 Jan 2007 12:21:56 - Handshake failed: Error reading from socket.
Thu, 18 Jan 2007 12:22:31 - Connection to news://news.povray.org, port 119
failed: Success
I'm new to PAN and newsfeeds, so there's likely to be something obvious that
I'm missing. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks,
-tom

How about asking how configure the newsreader in the newsreader's support
group? Any problems you are having with PAN are likely a
misconfiguration on your part, so you really need to ask in a PAN
newsgroup.
BTW, for Outlook Express there is a tutorial at
<http://www.povray.org/resources/newsgroups/oetut.php> and it really is
trivial.

Thanks nomail, but you're assuming that I haven't tried that already. I went
to the newsreader's site first for information. I've connected to numerous
other news feeds without a hitch. While the pov news feed is the only one I
can't subscribe to, I suspected there was a setting/permission I had not
found described on the
pov site.
Dang. I mistyped Linux too.
I'll just use the newsreader for non-pov feeds, and bookmark the pov news
page in Firefox.
Thanks anyway

I'm using 0.14.2 here, and it works just fine for me.
I didn't have to do anything special - just added the server
"news.povray.org" (don't use "news://news.povray.org" - maybe that's the
problem you're having), pulled down the list of groups, and subscribed to
them.

That was it, Jim.
I was using the address from the pov site (news://news.povray.org), not
simply news.povray.org as you noted.
Thanks!
