---------
What are the criteria for a BOF?
BOF events must be free of charge, related to computer graphics or
interactive techniques, open to all SIGGRAPH 2006 attendees, and
non-commercial in nature (topics specific to one commercial product or
company are discouraged). All BOFs will be evaluated on a case-by-case
basis to make sure they conform to the spirit of a BOF.

I'm going to this conference. One can set up "Birds of a Feather" meetings.
My guess is it ain't anything special, just one table in a lobby of a hotel
for an hour or so. If there are any pov'vers attending, let me know what
you think.

From what I know about povray, I'd assume the clerk at SIGGRAPH would not
balk at it being "one commercial product."

On the other hand, even with no response here it might be interesting to try
to set one up anyway, given how one could troll (the fishing term, not the
inflammatory debate connotation) for professionals in the industry who
might be povray hobbyists.

I'm honestly reluctant to sign up for a specific time slot today, as I don't
know what interesting things would be going on at other times at the
conference.

Concerning the idea of attracting CG-industry people that are POV-Ray
hobbyists - this i consider pretty unlikely, most people working for or
using commercial CG products will probably know POV-Ray only from
hearing or as one of the programs they have tried in their early days
and they remember being 'ugly'. So i assume your main 'customers' would
be hobbyists or people without a POV-Ray background just interested.

What you should definitely have is some info sheets/flyers to hand out
to people and maybe a notebook with a slideshow of POV-Ray images. We
could surely help you with preparing some info material if needed.

Christoph

Yes, please do. It could have value even if somehow I weren't able to pull
of a BOF event.

I'm certainly interested. In fact, I have a POV work that is screening in
the Animation Theatre (don't know times yet). But I live in Boston and will
definitely try to track you down. Submitted a proposal to do a Sketch (short
talk) on the piece and of course the POV.

See you there?
Best.

Congratulations on your submission!

Are you the one with whom I discussed flocking algorithms once about six
years ago? I'll look you up by off-line email once I know which days I'd be
at conference instead of vacationing with wife in town. Seriously, though,
what's the difference between full conference and conference select, for the
avid hobbyist? I know you get more, but is the "more" at all wortwhile? Is
your presentation an Exhibit?

I am awaiting word from SIGGRAPH staff on whether povray would qualify for a
BOF event. It is quite clear they don't want Maya to ask for free table
space here, based on how they worded the requirements.

Christoph,
I guess it would be good if your evangelistic tract for povray were one
page, or one double-sided page as a brochure. I will of course work on my
own tract in the form of a T-shirt I'd wear featuring, of course M.I.M.E.
Man.

And that raises an interesting question, as to what are the best things
about povray to entice folks to use it-- is it the things you can construct
entirely inside it, or its super-powerful rendering ability of scenes
constructed elsewhere....

I would say that POV-Ray's biggest strength is SDL. Allowing for
precise functions, in textures and for use as geometry.

Hi Greg. Yes, c'est moi, and thanks for the congrats....
I don't know the details of the different entrance options as I get a pass
as an exhibiter. The POV work will be in the Animation Theatre and run on a
loop during the day (I think). Will let you know when I learn more. It;s in
HD, btw.
Anyway, hope to hook up in town.
Best,
Dennis

Sounds fun. I don't know if I will make it, but I am sure going to try.

Okay, great.

Rather than email you all individually, can you say what days/ times during
the conference week are BAD for you??
