I am trying to make a height-field using Terragen. Can someone please tell
me how to make a usuable image file from Terragen? I do not see anything
useful in the export menu.

If you can manage to output the terrain to a DXF file, there are tools
to convert DXF to POV Mesh.

Terragen probably produces USGS ASCII DEM files, than using DEM2POV (check
www.terrainmap.com to download this application)you will generate a tga
grayscale image to use with "heightfield".

You can use Forester. It enable you to take any Terragen terrain, convert it to
POV-Ray, plant some
grass, flowers, shrubs and trees as well as some other elements.
You can get it at: http://www.dartnall.co.uk/

working with Terragen.
