I'm in a work environment where I'm not allowed to install s/w on my
machines, but I can access the web to do schoolwork during downtime. Is
there any web server out there with POV installed that I can upload a file,
then render it?
If not, this is what I envision:
User accesses a CGI (or PHP, ASP or whatever current tech) website with one
or both of the following
a. file field that user can type in a local file name
b. text window that user can paste a scene file's contents into
The user clicks some radio buttons to select options (image size, etc) and
clicks GO!
Server side script calls CL povray to render image.
The server returns a link to the jpg image that can be loaded by any web
browser.
Cleanup script deletes old renders (set expiration length) and new renders
overwrite old of same name.
Does this exist? If not, does anyone see any flaws in my plan? I'm gonna
go buy a cheap linux box tomorrow and set this up on my home network so I
can hit it from work. If anyone knows of any free hosting sites that allow
one to run CGI scripts, or would be willing to host this on one of their
machines, that would rock.

I'm not familiar with any public servers, but if one were up I'm sure it see
a lot of traffic and heavy processing loads.
As for your plan, you could do that or since you're going to be running a
linux box and assuming it could be on the web all the time, you could just
run an ssh server on it and just connect to it and run everything directly.
That's what I'd do at least and I'd imagine it'd be more secure.
I don't know why you'd need a hosting site either when you could just run
that straight from your box...

Unfotunately, my employer won't let me install a SSH client, otherwise I
could do that now, as I have shell accts on a few school computers, but no
account that lets me set up a cgi web site

I had a link to one, but it was POV 3.1g. Could look it up in my
backed-up bookmarks files if you like.

Please do, that would be nice.
However for my school project, I'll probably need to set up my own, because
I'm modifying POV for a graphics class.
So, are there any pitfalls to my plan? I don't plan to throw it open to the
world (sotty, by my ISP would kill me!) so bandwidth isn't really an issue.
If it works, I may try to find someplace to host it for others.

Can't think of any problems immediately, sounds like a decent enough plan,
although I think there might be some php exploits that may or may not have
been fixed yet, you may want to look into that.
As for not installing software on other computers, I don't know if this
counts or not but I installed an ssh client and my IM software (Trillian)
onto a USB drive I carry with me and run the software off of it. That way
I don't ever install on others computers while I'm travelling or at school
and don't have to worry about being out of touch.

Thanks! That's exactly what I'm looking for! It will work for me now while
I'm learning the language.

The other alternative is to send a scene file by email, with the options
you want in the body of the message and the scene files as
"attachments", and have the server mail you back the image when it's done.
The web really isn't designed for transactions that take minutes, let
alone hours. :-)

You have to wonder what Mr. Smucker
thought of that tag line, don't you?

Would someone like to test this for me ... quick rendering files only.
Thanks!
