I'm still quite new, and I want to see how quick other newbies are learning.
So, I'm proposing a new compition. There's no prize I'm afraid, but all you
have to do is post up an image that only used POV-RAY (add-on GUIs, e.g
Moray are not allowed, but #includes or #macros are fine). Make sure it's
titled something appropriate ("POVCOMP for Newbies" would be perfect) and
put in the images board. (povray.binaries/images, and I invite ANYONE, new
or old to put in their opinions. You can take as long as you want, but keep
an eye out on the newsgroup so you will know if a closing date has been
agreed upon later.
Here's the catch: I don't want anyone with over 2 year's experience posting
images. The "experts" can, however post images they produced when they were
new.
I'm fussy what version of Pov-Ray created the image, so anyone can post
early work, as long as you indicate how long you have been Povvin'
Oh, one more thing - no spheres on checkered planes - I mean your first REAL
masterpiece :D

Bummer. Then I suppose I can't participate with this:

plane{-x+y,-1pigment{bozo color_map{[0rgb x][1rgb x+y]}turbulence 1}}
sphere{0,2pigment{rgbt 1}interior{media{emission 1density{spherical
density_map{[0rgb 0][.5rgb<1,.5>][1rgb 1]}turbulence.9}}}scale
<1,1,3>hollow}text{ttf"timrom""Warp".1,0translate<-1,-.1,2>}// - Warp -

A worthy challenge for the pov-masters?
Photo.net is a great source of reference material too, the content is vast
and diverse.

I'm sure Mick H. could get close to that, time permitting. ;) That's one
angry-looking cloud ready to 'bump' into another...

Apart from an extra information chunk containing your experience with
POV, I think this is basically what we do in p.b.i
BTW how do you propose to count the experience? in POV time or wall
time? Many of us have jobs and other obligations that make it impossible
to POV full time (my estimate is 1-2% over the last year, which was
indeed a bad POV year)

You know, I really like this idea. In addition to giving those less
experienced with a chance to compete, I'm interested in seeing some of
the early works created by some of the people around here.
If I can find an old piece of mine, I think I'd we willing the accept
the embarrassment of others seeing it in return for seeing some other
people's early works.

This was the intended idea - I think it would be interesting to chart the
rise and development of POV-RAY without all the add-ons. I wanted to see
how the boundaries were re-established in this community time and time
again. I'm really hoping for early versions so people can appreciate how
much effort goes into POV-RAY pre-GUI.
About the experience - I think it would be fair to count in actual POV-Time,
i.e building scenes from conception to completion.
