Do you mean the texture, shape or both? To even try
to answer we'd need to know what kind of clay you
wish to make. Clay is a highly varied material.

ad to that, wet or dry? for wet clay (i'm thinking a wet clay pot in the
progress of being made), maybe try a wee little variable reflection and the
fresnel keyword. when using fresnel in a reflection block, don't forget it
needs an ior statement in an interior block for the object it will be
applied to.

There was one clay in Neverhood game. See
http://www.animateclay.com/promo27.htm for references.

Good example, which brings back the question of what he
wants to create. The material (texture) is not too different
from plastic, but what makes it unique is the subtle form
variation produced by being worked into shape by fingers.
That's why I asked if he was interested in the material or
the shape. If he wants to replicate the general form of
claymation figures, then either blobs or sPatch would work,
or perhaps Wings3D if the figures need to be smooth.
For the texture, perhaps with some normals with turbulence
and a slope map added?
