Is there an easy way to cause the edges of a heightfield to gradually go
from 0% to 100% around the egdes over a certain distance so they appear
complete flat at the base?

I think if you scale the HF correctly it might work - scale it very large
and see what happens... or just use a relatively "flat" black to white
gradient when drawing the source image - this will lead to a gentle upward
slope.
