I have been adding images to zazzle.com over the last 2 days and never
really took much notice of the dpi and sizes required.

This was my first mistake.

Just wondering if you submit an image and it is below the dpi requirement,
will it have a drastic effect on the resulting prints and apparel?

Or shall I just start from scratch.

Please note most of the images are very old (over 8 years), when I was
creating images on a p75, so an image at 2500 x 1800 would have taken over
a week to produce.

So I kept my images between 800 x 600 and 1024 x 768

Will this cause a problem??

It will limit the saleability.  It won't let folks make a wallsize poster,
but you could probably get away with T-shirts.

And as an aside,  I think that "dpi" is a concept that only provides
confusion here.  You really mean "number of pixels in my image".

Actually the zazzle site is a bit confusing as it says to make the image be
smaller or equal :

Posters & Prints: 100ppi
The images that you upload will be converted to 100ppi (pixels per inch) if
not already at this resolution. This means every 100 pixels in your image
will become 1 inch when printed. For example, if you submit a 4000 pixel by
3500 pixel image for a poster, it will be printed at 40" by 35". This is
because: 4000 pixels divided by 100 pixels/inch = 40 inches, 3500 pixels
divided by 100 pixels/inch = 35 inches.

We recommend that you add images that are smaller than, or equal to, the
maximum sizes:


Portfolio (vertical):  1100 pixels x 1650 pixels  = 16.5" x 11"
Portfolio (horizontal):  1650 pixels x 1100 pixels  = 11" x 16.5"
Small (vertical):  1500 pixels x 2250 pixels  = 15" x 22.5"
Small (horizontal):  2250 pixels x 1500 pixels  = 22.5" x 15"
Large (vertical):  2300 pixels x 3450 pixels  = 23" x 34.5"
Large (horizontal):  3450 pixels x 2300 pixels  = 34.5" x 23"
Huge (vertical):  3500 pixels x 5250 pixels  = 35" x 52.5"
Huge (horizontal):  5250 pixels x 3500 pixels  = 52.5" x 35"
Colossal (vertical):  7800 pixels x 5200 pixels  = 78" x 52"
Colossal (horizontal):  5200 pixels x 7800 pixels  = 52" x 78"

Um very confusing.

For a given image size in pixels, the maximum print size is the one they
suggest. A smaller (than the one suggested) print size will always look OK
(or better). Larger ones are possible but not advisable. If you really want
to make a colossal picture with your 800x600 pixel image you can, it just
going to be very blurred/pixellated/grainy on close up. In fact, if you have
an image editor, you can resize/resample the image yourself and see if you
like it. I got away in the past making postcards out of 800x600 images but
larger prints are out of the question for images that small. Also, keep in
mind that Zazzle works at 100 dpi which is quite low already.

If you're using povray to make an image,  the only thing you need to
consider is the 800x600 or the pixel dimensions.   The dots per inch as you
create the image, especially for JPG's,  really has no meaning:  it really
only has useful meaning in the output device.

Zazzle will either sell someone an 11x16.5 inch poster or a 15x22.5 inch
poster, etc.  The number of pixels in your image (not **your** "dpi")
determines which size options will be available to your customers, based on
the  "dpi" capabilities of the printer **at zazzle**.   The more pixels, the
more different size posters will be available.
