Hi,

Recently I've discovered that the two image browsers I use in conjunction
with graphics work (Irfanview, Xnview) do not seem to follow image format
protocols exactly. This results in unrecognized image files, distorted
images, and incorrect data in the "image information" function.
Most notably, the number of grays in a 16-bit png, pgm or other format,
is reported as 255 or 156. Some image displayed correctly in one browser
are distorted in another.
Does anyone know of a software program which is known for its accuracy
in recognizing, displaying, and reporting of image data? And that covers a
wide range of formats?

                                      Thanks,
                                       Jim

have you helped its authors to make it better ? have you reported it ? what
did they say ?

I use Irfanview but I'm not advanced image manipulator.

Hi ABX,

Yes, I've made suggestions and contributions to several opensource and
private software efforts. Sometimes, however, the task exceeds the amount of
time and effort I have to dedicate to the work. And ,for some, it does
involve
a lot of testing and cross-comparisons to compensate for my lack of
familiarity
with programming and image formats. There also comes a point at which I
expect
certain details to be taken care of by the author without intervention.
Adherence to format protocols is one of these.

                                             Thanks,
                                              Jim

Hi Mike,

I downloaded ImageMagick a couple of years ago. I believe it was
a DOS suite then. I'll examine the current version for useability.

                                      Thanks for the reference,
                                             Jim Julian
