I bought my first povray book today, though I admit it's a bit dated.
"Raytracing Worlds with Pov-Ray"  The Official Pov-Ray group book by Waite
Group press.

  I am wondering from anyone else who has owned this how valueable it is,
considering it came with 2.2 version of pov-ray.  Is it still mostly viable
or am I going to learn an abandoned trade here?

No idea about that one. I have one called "Raytracing Creations" also from
Waite Group. I can't recall what version of POV-Ray came with it though. I
used to get updated versions from the BBS, back before the WWW.  :)

Sigh.. Well that didn't seem to work. Everyone keeps telling me that to reply to
my posts they have to hand edit something, but no one tells me what or how,
so I can't fix what I am doing wrong either. :p

Anyway, posting the same comment again in a way that I know works... :p

It is not a bad book. Things like halo and such didn't find there way into POV
until later, so likely everything in it will work as is. The major problem is finding
the 3rd. party programs the book lists. A few like the rock generator are now
replacable with some form of isosurface (If I had a clue how), but in 3.1 it was
still about the only way. In any case most of them should have equivalents
out now, it just bugs me that they often don't work any better (or sometimes
worse) than the free ones that existed back then. :p

I have that book. Very very outdated, I'm afraid. Most of what you
find in it is still usable, but largely in the sense that a Model T
could theoretically be used to drive you to and from work (if you
didn't have too much of a commute). Some gorgeous images, and a
good bit of POV-Ray historic value make it a collectable item for
POV users.

But many, many things have been added since that book was new, and
if you really want to learn POV, read the tutorial sections in the
docs and you'll end up a good deal more enlightened. Even the sections
on Moray refer to a long since antiquated version of Moray that only
looks superficially like the current edition (and then only looking
at the screen from across the room <g>)

You have your reply-to field set to - web.3d66d69dfb68f064d52563f20@news.povray.org
Check your preferences and make sure the reply-to field is clear. Or maybe use a
real news reader like Netscape.

Now the docs say you use follow-up to post a comment to the current thread, but
unless I copy the message ID into te follow-up field it doesn't post to the thread,
just to the group. But apparently Opera is copying the blasted field into the reply
field
as well. :p I will try the reply option and see what happens instead. I really don't
want to install yet another browser...

Well... That didn't exactly work the way I expected either. Had to put 
the last message ID into the To: field to get it to post and not sure it 
posted correctly anyway. So... Back to trying MicroPlanet Gravity. :p
