I have this irresistible urge to shorten other people's signatures...

I'm not sure whether to feel hurt or honored that you haven't shortened this
one yet.

Cool (or geek) factor set apart, these signatures are a pain whenever
you do a text search on a pov keyword to find an old post. I encountered
this problem regulary while trying to find if a bug was already reported
or not.

I have no negative feeling with this and I want to hurt no one. I am not
even complaining. It's just that my english isn't good enough to put
this as tactfully as I'd wish to.

Povingly,

Philippe

What, your search program doesn't automatically strip signatures? :)

Mine doesn't either, actually, but it seems somewhat odd to be searching on
keywords anyway... I usually search on concept words.

Of course searching for common keywords does make no sence, but i quite
often search for the more seldom ones, like isosurface function names etc.

Oddly enough, after posting that I went and searched on the word "background"
which just happened to appear in the version of my .sig that was attached to
that post, and lo and behold I got a bunch of articles that actually had
something to do with backgrounds. If articles with my .sig were included,
they were toward the bottom of the (relevance-weighted) search.

Very nice. I had hoped you'd do something about those awful unions.

I also tried to replace those strings with numerical values. If you had used
4-bit values (2+2 bits) to encode the coordinates it would have worked just
fine (it could have reduced the sig even more, besides making it a bit more
obfuscated), but you have used 5-bit values (2+3 bits) which made the resulting
numbers just too big to be of any use (at least in reducing the sig).
