I've been through Christoph Hormann's radiosity tutorial and found the
method of differencing pictures very useful as to check how different sets
of parameters work when compared to eachother.
How is that differencing accomplished?

It's done with Pain Shop Pro's Image Arithmetic, most other imaging
programs should contain similar functions. After differencing, usually
contrast is increased.
