Why are you asking? Does current version not meet your expectation?

Is simple curiosity. Because PovRay 3.5 have a date of 2002 and i dont know
if the "project" stay alive, or 3.5 was the last pov.

Didn't someone do a faq for this?

Pov 4 will be a major rewrite of Pov (one of the main reasons for this is to
allow, iirc, the code to be brought under one of the GPL licences, which is
impossible with the current code).

There will be an update to 3.5 soon (iirc) - a bugfix release.

Pov is not dead.

And Pov will never die, given the community it has! That's at least what I
think. If some dumb game like "Black & White" will have a community that
keeps it alive, why shouldn't POV-Ray? It's not like the sources are
affordable or such... But no, let's not talk of such things. The bugfix
release is probably being tested or still written, I don't know, but I'm
always sure that there's a simple rule to all things Pov: It's done when
it's done.

What sign would you like to expect to see to know it is alive? In other words
what you did to verify POV activity yourself? I do not expect you know every
thread on this newsserver but no dubts large number of posts on this server
has meaning. Why new entries appear in 'News' sections on the website with
lack of 'POV-Ray is dead'? Why informations for Windows 2003 and note about
beta for MacPOV-3.5.1 appeared on download page? What is said in faq group
about POV4? AFAIK 3.5.1 (bugfix release) is under development and IIRC will be
released when will be ready, thought if you know any bug you would expect to
be fixed it has to be known with well written bug report first. Please, say to
your friend that we all wish to have POV-Ray 4 with two zeros in year number
;-)

Note that it's not the first time that someone posts a question about
POV-Ray being still alive or not. I guess that it has a lot to do with the
way many Open Source projects are managed. I see that Giuseppe is also a
Blender user, and, in the case of Blender, updates and releases, some of
them important (new interface, native raytracing), have been issued at a
very fast pace lately (there are announces on an almost daily basis). This,
for what I gather from the Blender forums, keeps the community quite happy
and is a sure sign of vitality, but it also seems to come with a certain
price in usability, as the new features may be unstable, incomplete, not
well-documented, or cause legacy problems.

People used to this are certainly puzzled by POV-Ray's slow development
pace, which favours stability and usability over new features, and I found
that this simple concept wasn't quite clear for many people. Possibly this
could be explained somewhere.
