When parsing big files and memory use goes upto 2Gb a window pops up that
says that I've ran out of memory. When I close the window and then POV-
Ray, my machine resets. I don't like the resetting part.
Probably more a windows problem than a POV-Ray problem, but I thought I'd
report it here, just in case.
Athlon 1800+, 1.5 Gb, Win2000, POV-Ray 3.5

I'm sincerely surprised by this (I though you were talking about win9x
before I read your specs). I have always had the impression that win2k
should be so stable that this kind of thing shouldn't crash it.

Well, you raqn against a WinDOS limit and thus you deserve a penalty ;-)

me, _*/ME/*_ ?, I didn't design the fu#$@$@# program. It's Bill who
deserves the spanking, a lot of it! And I'm not going to put XP on this
machine :P
Will FreeBSD behave better under these circumstances?

Well, you run out of address space for an application at 4 GB on any 32 bit
system, which is every currently available PC. Sun offers 64 bit
entry-level workstations for below US$1000 if you really need a 64 bit
address space: <http://www.sun.com/desktop/sunblade100/>

Sadly they can hold only up to 2 GB of memory :(
Ah well, time will solve the problem.

Just wondering, what caused this huge memory requirement in your scene ?

Neat, but the data sheet says it only supports up to 2 GB memory on board
and what's 64 bit address space worth with only 2 GB memory.
My suggestion for ingo would be to either make a smaller scene ;-) or use
a different OS (i don't know about FreeBSD but Linux supports full 4 GB).
Of course more than 4 GB will be still be a problem.
BTW most cheap PC boards only support up to 1.5 GB memory (3x512 MB).
There are 1 GB modules available, but quite expensive and i don't know how
many boards support them.

Well, unless you want to invest something in the five to six digit range,
yes, but they still allow applications to have more meomory. It will be
virtual memory, but at least it will be available ;-)

I know, but it is the cheapest available 64 bit workstation I know about.
And applications will be able to use all the virtual memory the harddisks
can provide. The only other options would be the servers Sun or the many
other companies sell, but the price tag is out of Ingo's reach, I suspect
;-)
