There used to be a welcome message that explained that cookies.
Unfortuantely that message was "lost" very recently and we have not yet
recovered a copy of it...

All good newsreaders can do this as well.
Be advised that downloading lots of pages via a browser site archiving
feature is possible if it supports cookies, but it will be slower as the
number of page views per user and minute is limited (and locking the cookie
won't help).

yes, my newsreader can do this, but ask typical outlook user how he copy his
folder to different machine ? I suppose he usually download it from server
insted local copying

it took me seconds to find (via google) an idiot proof, wizard based tool to
rip email addresses from newsgroups. if you know how to email lots of people
you will have no problem getting software to help you email even more.

Everything can be hacked. Does it mean non of cures should be used?
I have much more spam to e-mails used in webpages than used in news.

I've been unable to access the web interface over the last couple of days,
as it happens I've also been working on a CGI scrpt that uses cookies and
I can confirm that cookies seem to be working properly in Mozilla, but the
POV news web interface isn't.

Cookies enabled and working Mozilla 1.0 RC2, but news web interface not
working for me (as mentioned in post above).

Maybe some time ago you refused a cookie from news.povray.org and had
Mozilla set to "remember this decision"?

But this "cure" is a really ugly one since it bannes innocent people who
just don't have cookies enabled from using the web interface, and also it
obviously sometimes causes problems with enabled cookies...
Such a "cures" should alway be server-side if possible
(like don't showing email adresses, and limit the number of pages a
client can request)

This seems like a good sugestion so I checked it out and:
.news.povray.org TRUE /mynews/ FALSE 1336950802 POVWebNGSign
eJwDAAAAAAE%3D
.news.povray.org TRUE /post/ FALSE 1336950802 POVWebNGSign
eJwDAAAAAAE%3D
.news.povray.org TRUE / FALSE 1336950802 POVWebNGPrefs
1000%2C50%2C10%2Casc%2C2%2C1
%2C3%2C2%2C0%2C0%2C
.news.povray.org TRUE / FALSE 1336950802 POVWebNGTimer
-552614182.NTkxOWM5YjIyMWY5Z
TQ2YmNhNTIzNDg0ZjhjYzAzNjM%3D.MTAyMTU5MDgwMSwsLCws
Right at the end of my cookies file where I expected it to be, looks to me
like it's accepting them, but the pov server can't read them for some
reason (maybe they are being written incorrectly).
