Style 2 has my preference. Is easier to read than style 1.

Nice work. I have found that POVRay in combination with a free gif animator
( I use the free version of ULead) can produce some nice looking buttons. An
example can be found at:
http://www.kellyair.net/
(Javascript has to be active to see the "mouseover" feature work.)

Yours however are nice - it's obviously a fine line between looking
pretty and just being annoying and distracting in the corner of you eye.
*Subtly* animated buttons: pretty
blink tags: bad

Apart from the already mentioned you should add a preload script to that
page in order to ensure the mouseover version shows up without a delay on
the first mouseover event. ofc i'm aware that this is just a simple test
page :)

If you're using Firefox, you can eliminate them with the following
procedure:
In the address (URL) box, type "about:config" (without the quotes).
This brings up a list of ALL the available Firefox options, many of
which are not available in any of the menus. Scroll down to
"image.animation_mode", double-click on it, then in the "Enter String
Value" dialog box that pops up change the "normal" to "once" or "none"
(without the quotes, of course). None give you no animation and once
lets it cycle once before it quits. Naturally, this only affects
animated gifs, no other animations, but it does reduce some distracting
eye-candy.
Flash animations can be eliminated with one of the standard Firefox
extensions. Click Tools->Extensions, then click on "get more
extensions" in the lower right corner of the dialog box. Search for and
install "Flashblock". All Flash animations are replaced with an "f"
icon which changes to a triangle with a mouse-over. Clicking on this
triangle will let the Flash play, so it gives you the option of seeing
it if it's the main purpose of the web site, or ignoring it if it's an ad.
BTW, I got this information from the book "don't click on the blue e!
switching to firefox" (and yes, the title is all lower case). It's an
O'Reilly book by Scott Granneman, and is an excellent user reference for
Firefox.

I recommend installing the prefbar extension for configuring this and
many other things (such as turning on/off java, javascript, referrer
sending, etc). It's really handy.
