There is a texture here for Saturn's ring:

https://www.solarsystemscope.com/textures/

How do I apply this texture to a POV-Ray disc? Thanks.

Mike

On my light side, I have uv-mapping of disc in hgpovray38, so that
should be trivial. (probably only a problem of orienting the texture
correctly in regard to UV axes)

On the official side, it might be a situation for the warp cylindrical.

http://wiki.povray.org/content/Reference:Warp

The dist_exp should probably be 0, as distance from the axis should be
ignored.

Another question: The bitmap is long in the horizontal direction, but I
don't know which end is supposed to be closer to the axis and which is
supposed to be toward the outside of the ring. Any ideas?

Left side of the image is the planet side.

Another question to be figured out is, what are the proper distances
from Saturn's center to the inner and outer border of the image?

My guesstimation - judging from
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rings_of_Saturn - is that the image is
supposed to represent the range from the start of the D ring (left side,
66,900 km from Saturn's center) to the F ring (right side, ~140,220 km).

Alternatively, the image may be supposed to start at the planet's
equatorial surface, 60,268 km from the center.

I emailed the owner of that site but haven't gotten a response yet.

The cylindrical warp is not having the desire effect. See the attachment.

Let me guess : You rotated the image 90°

I hope you rotated the texture in the correct direction.
