Just a heads up, that I did some cleanup over on the Wiki. A while back
the reference section was moved to it's own namespace. For example
Documentation:Agate Pattern was moved to Reference:Agate Pattern ... the
cleanup just removed the now duplicate files in the Documentation
namespace, so if anyone notices any irregularities please let me know.

Seems ok.
Something I have wanted to ask about for a while: the font size is very
small, especially the green ones. For the younger people this might not
be a problem, but for older ones like me, they give serious trouble with
reading ;-)
At least, why not make the green text of the same font size as the rest
of the document?

In the html version the font size is dependent on what browser default
size is set ... Ctrl + makes it bigger Ctrl - makes it smaller Ctrl .
resets to default. Does windoze version have similar?

Yes it has. I had not been aware of this ;-)

Hi Jim,
what really needs a cleanup is the link-collection. A lot of them are down, may
be some of them moved and others were changed over the years and have no
POV-content any longer since their author switched to Autodesk. At the moment
POV is occupied at both of my machines - the Suse as well as the Windoze (typo?)
one - searching for more realistic pyroclastic flows around Mt. Rainier using
Rune's particle system so I have a little time to lend a hand with this issue.
Unfortunatelly I cannot find the "`create accound"' option at the POV-Wiki. As
it seems this option is deactivated due to spam bots.
Best regards,
Michael

A while back someone was actively working on resolving some of the sites
that (like you pointed out) had moved or gone away. I'm not sure how far
they had gotten with that effort. I'd have to check, but IIRC he'd made
/some/ progress. The user "Mr" posts here from time to time .. he's the
chap that maintains the Blender->POV exporter. Perhaps he will notice
this thread and fill us in on where he stopped. Something I remember
about his effort that he was able to find some of the disappeared sites
on some archive site ... waybackmachine or something like that. At any
rate I can create accounts, but would have to classify that as low
priority. Since I'm not someone who turns done help I /might/ be able to
get to it later next week. Still interested?

Hi!
I have not given up but it's been a while since I haven't worked on it:
So far, I have done entirely with all their subsections:
3D Animation Utilities
3D Image and Texture Resources
3D Magazines, Lists, and FAQs
3D Programs
What remains:
3D Discussion Forums
3D Link Sites
3D Model Sites
3D Prototyping
3D Resources
3D Tutorials
POV-Ray Include, Macro and Object Files
POV-Ray People Pages
What help I would like: a first pass from someone who would not delete any link,
but just correct the ones obvious like when the name or directory tree has
changed a little but the site and/or content still exists at the same host or
otherwise if possible linked by its original author. When in doubt do nothing.
For the deleting of dead link, I'd rather do that myself after I triple checked
that the Internet Time Machine; reocities and other such archeological tools ALL
fail (that way I managed to declare officially dead less than 5 or 10 links over
the sections mentioned in which hundreds were failing. So If you find one just
leave it as it is. The rest that you'll have done will speed up my finding it.
I hope this is not too directive? in any case, if you happen to finish that pass
get in touch with me via the discussion page my wiki account is Maurice.
Thanks a lot for your help

Yes, there will be other evenings with long time renderings. No need to hurry...
I looked through the discussion pages and it seems that the user "Maurice" has
worked through the "Animation Utilities", "Image and Texture Resources",
"Magazines, Lists, and FAQs" and "Programs". At "Resources" he left an entry to
start there next time. This was 11. December 2011. All other discussion pages
are empty.
Ah, while writing this response, Mr (aka Maurice) gave an answer and confirmed
the findings above. Seems I have to learn more about the time machines. In the
past I found only two lost resources at such machines by simply googling for
them. But I looked only for ones I was really interested in. There are some
details in Maurice's "directives" I didn't comprehend - may be lost to
translation and the reason why it took so long to answer - and I still need an
account at the POV-Wiki.
I propose to communicate in private about both issues. My email is
mi-friedrichs317t-online.de. Please replace the 317 by @. Today I will withdraw
into RL but will answer tomorrow.
Best regards,
Michael

I considered your answers a while and decided to withdraw from my offer to help
here. I hope, we are a community here and no one has to give "directives" as mr
tried.

Well I think Maurice is a pretty reasonable fellow and I'm sure he
didn't mean it as it was taken ... I think partly to blame here as I
felt the methodical approach was best. He was working under my guidance,
so perhaps if I step back and let you two hash it out you might reconsider.

Hi Jim,
yes I will reconsider. But I have some remarks. First: within a Wiki every user
has to have the same rights. That is one of the central ideas of Wikis. No one
has to give directives to others. If a user changed an entry usually he gives a
comment at the discussion page and another user can restore the changes (and
comment about it at the discussion page as well).
And I think that not every link is really worth to be restored by every costs.
You have to look at the content. Some are redundant or trivial or covered by
other entries, or simply outdated by newer and better approaches to a topic.
E.g. Sonyas trees were fine at the time she posted it, but nowadays we have
Arbaro, POV-Tree and other tools to create trees, which are much better. Why
preserve the old link? And do efforts to find it? Or for the 3D models section.
There you can simply eliminate links since there are a lot of new ones giving
other free models.
And... I think you know that I'm not a rookie, who offered help here.
Best regards,
Michael

First off let me begin by saying that the lesson in wiki concepts, rules
and best practices was unnecessary, however I will say that I can't find
fault with a single thing that you've said ... on a traditional Wiki all
those things and more apply. As for the POV-Wiki, the documentation and
the links list are the source for other processes, and as such there
have been rules imposed for good reasons. Other area's more closely
conform to your aforementioned idea(s) of what a Wiki should be like.
As for the merits of chasing a dead link or not ... me personally I'd be
inclined to cut my losses after only a short search, but I can't find
fault with someone who'd give the extra effort.
The more I think about it the more I just don't understand why you feel
like you can't contribute under those conditions.

And I can't understand why anyone would bother to pursue this with
someone who obviously gets WAY too upset over trivial issues so easily.
In the long run you're probably saving yourself a lot of hassle and
drama by just letting him go.

My point was really to make sure we wouldn't loose anything unnecessary:
provided dead links are kind of tagged instead of deleted; anybody can do
anything he pleases in joyous anarchy.
take care

Hi all,
first of all I will apologize. I didn't intended to upset you. And I didn't
wanted to tell a lesson about wikis. I wanted an explanation why the POV-Wiki
has other rules as the Wikipedia e.g. so I tried to describe the differences. It
was not intended as a lesson about wikis. I was unaware of the fact that the
link-list of the POV-Wiki is a source for other processes (I assume it will be
synced with the original POV-site?) completely. That explains all and I have no
problems to accept this. But I had no idea about this so far.
To be more constructive. I was not lazy the last hours and worked through nearly
all the links Maurice has left (the 3d resources and half of the include files
is missing so far, but I have visited all other links - from the macro and
object files up to the peoples pages. I have the odd habit to start bottom up.).
I regained a lot of the broken ones by the "wayback machine" but not all.
But for the moment I only scribbeled it down to outprints of the link lists and
it will take a week to have it in a form I can present you, I fear.
Best regards,
Michael

In all my browsers except Opera, the monospace text is much tinier than the
regular text. Inspect element doesn't show anything untoward in the style
sheets, so I suspect that there is some common browser default that sets
monospace smaller than regular. This differential is present regardless of how
many times you press Ctrl +.
The text is exactly the same size in Opera. I have tweaked my Opera setup over
the years, and I do remember messing with the monospace font size, so that
/might/ explain why Opera is different for me.
I have posted some screen shots to p.b.i.
Web browsers: Chrome, Firefox, Konqueror, and Opera.
Operating system: openSUSE 12.2 Linux/KDE.

In firefox edit->preferences->content->Fonts & Colors->Advanced you can
set the default monospace font size ... ctrl + and ctrl - work as expected

I have the latest firefox, but there is no such thing as
edit->preferences->content->fonts.... ;-)
You get there through: Extra->Options->Content->Advanced.
Anyway, thanks for the tip because I had not realized it could be
adapted by the user. Logical when you think about it, but I still
assumed those things were fixed by the builder. My knowledge of html
dates from 10 years ago and my wiki knowledge is 0 :-)

Hi to all,
I did a lot of work the last days to confirm my first findings regaining the
lost links at wiki.povray.org. Doing this, I developed a certain Indisposition
to simply exchange the broken links to ones given by wayback (archive.org). I
will open a new thread about it, to dscuss this issue.
Best regards,
Michael

Hi Maurice,
since I noticed that you are working on the links lists again I would really
like to send you my list.
Unfortunatelly I have no user account at the POV-Wiki so far and cannot use your
discussion page there. Can you supply me with a contact please? May be it

I will simply get rid of this job. Since you did not answer, may be the wheather
is to fine at south France, here is my work
The following list treats only the broken links or the ones showing problems
respectively:
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
POV-Ray People Pages
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
Anto Matkovic's Page
POV content removed. Older content can be found easily at wayback.
Dennis Miller's Page
http://web.archive.org/web/20120319140240/http://www.casdn.neu.edu/~dmiller/
IB Rassmusan home page
First there is a typo above. The main page is running, but I could not follow
his internal links.
Liam Jackson's online portfolio.
Has 45 entries at wayback. I have not looked through all. But seems that only
the html is archived and not the content.
Mathematical Art
Can be deleted here, since it is in the "include"-section too.
Pod - Home Page
Site is still active, but I don't think that this pics are renderings. Has 60
entries at wayback, mostly HTTP 302. The earlier mirrors have only the main
page.
POV-Ray Users Website
http://web.archive.org/web/20050828224610/http://rsj.mobilixnet.dk/povrayusers/general.html
No photographs of the entrants, only the list and the given biographies.
Steve's 0 PPS Home Page
http://web.archive.org/web/20080509105020/http://www.zeropps.uklinux.net/
The World of POV-Ray Users
http://web.archive.org/web/20070505111338/http://www.3digitaleyes.com/povwrldjpg.htm
Only main page, so somewhat useless.
Thorsten R. Frohlich Website
http://web.archive.org/web/20120501044145/http://trf.de/
Uncle Tyler's Get Away
http://web.archive.org/web/20080514063612/http://home.pacbell.net/tylereng/index.html
Is in the "macro"-section too.
United Artists Galleries
http://web.archive.org/web/20040605143629/http://jkuag.tripod.com/gallery.html
webring.povray.co.uk
Can only find the main page at wayback, not the sites. I was not really
surprised. There is a link to another webring somewhere here
[hub.webring.org/hub/povrayring] containing the sites from N.B., Sonya Roberts
(with the loss of her tree macros) and many others.

3D Cafe's Free Stuff
http://web.archive.org/web/20060301120449/http://www.3dcafe.com/wrapper/
Seems to be content there, but could not find POV-related stuff. I used the
first snapshot here since tha latest ones didn't work. And since this is a
larger site, I only tested to download a model, which worked, clicked a little
bit around and found no problems. But my tests are fare away from being
exhaustive.
Anatomy of an Explosion
Anatomy of a sprite
Same site, still active. Cannot find a POV-related content.

side is active at reocities, both links refer to the same resource

As to link sites and their mirrors at the wayback machine: In some cases they
work, with others not. It seems that the wayback machine replaces links by
adding the actual address of the mirrored site at the wayback machine as a
prefix. Since the crawling stops after a certain depth or with links to other
sites, this replaced links cannot work.
