Is there any way to generate a solid with a well-defined interior from a 
bicubic patch?

Preferably from a set of patches that match up perfectly, but would be

The ior effect is evaluated only at the surface. The same goes for the 
dispersion. Colour fading within an object is evaluated between the 
entry point and exit point. What lies between don't mather.

If your bicubic_patch form a reasonably closed shape, it can be 
considered as "solid". It's solid in the sense that it can have an 
interior where you define an ior, some dispersion and colour fading.
You may also apply sone media, but I'm not sure that it will behave 
correctly. Some testing is needed.
The same can be done with an union of triangles.
