Following on from the earlier two Geocities threads, I've updated the page
at http://povhouse.freewebsites.com/geocities/objects.html to show the
progress for the stuff I'm concentrating on.

I'm now exclusively looking at the first table at the top of that page,
which contains objects likely to be suitable for the Object Collection. This
is just 16 authors. I've so far got responses from 6 authors and I've
started adding models to the Object Collection where I've received
permission.

There are still 10 authors that I didn't get a response from. This could be
because the email addresses I've got for them are defunct. If you think you
might have more up to date contact details for these 10 people please let me
know.

Regards,
Chris B.

I realized, reading the above page, that you may have thought I was
going to re-host all of the sites. That was not my intent, though I will
help out if just a few of them want sites re-hosted. My intent was to
host only the files that were authorized for redistribution. To do that,
I have set a wget script loose on all of the pages that you linked to,
just downloading the whole directory structure to be sure I don't miss
any files. After that, I am going through all of the povray files:
scenes, scripts, includes, etc. Only the ones that have permission, in
the file or on the webpage, to be redistributed will be.

The rest, I guess that is just for personal use.

That's what I thought. It's just that, with some of the content it's a bit
difficult to spot the authorization, so I've been taking a note of any
authorization I've spotted as I've been grubbing around on the site and in
the files for the small subset of 16 sites I've been looking at in detail.
I've also been keeping a note of authorizations received via this newsgroup
or that I received via email in my spreadsheet. For the work you're doing,
that's solely in case you find any of it useful and it's only for the subset
of 16 sites that I've been digging around in.

Unfortunately I haven't been able to update the list on the 'freewebsites'
host because it hasn't let me FTP to it for days. I've now got responses for
8 of the subset of 16 sites that I've focused down on, either with
permission to put content on the object collection or with news that the
site is being relocated by the author.

Ok. That sounds good to me. Does your list include the sites on the
'tutorial' list and the 'utilities and plugins' list?

Canceled the previous message, skipped half the stuff I needed to
mention, and refreshed my skill with sed in a few minutes.

Any chance I could get that updated list? I may take a local copy just
till I can peruse the script/model/includes myself, but with that list I
could move them from high priority down to last in line.

Yes, I can add those sites to the list. I a just running the page
through sed and grep to pull all of the websites out, and feeding that
to a script, so if some website does not start with
http://something.geocities.com/ then I may miss it. Otherwise, no
problem. The only slow down has been Geocities throwing me HTTP 503
errors. I think wget was hitting the pages too quickly, so I was finding
several pieces missing. I finally found the command to slow it down, and
have it trawling at a slower speed now with no problems. Should be done
with local copies by this evening for the priority pages, can then focus
on the non-priority ones.

Great work! You should probably upload a copy of the list to the wiki so
that we have a record in case anyone comes asking.

Also, some sites may not be entirely lost, as they may have been
archived by the Wayback Machine. You can't count on this, though. For
instance, the earliest record of my old Geocities page is from circa
2003, despite the fact that my site had been online (until recently)
since 1997. I *think* you can fill out a request form for it to trawl a
particular site. But this option might only be available to a site's
author. (Not 100% sure.)

I just tried a few of the sites that I've been looking at. The download
links on the Wayback Machine copies that I tried (links to zip files) seemed
to all be broken. Maybe they don't support zip files? Also I found that most
of the sites I tried are missing graphics and some obviously aren't present
at all.

Still that might provide a bit of a last-ditch catch-net. I see that you can
nominate sites, making them more likely to be archived. Anyone fancy doing
something with that?

Chris B.

Only snags on the list so far are Colefax's page, #309, and #333. All of
those have been handing back HTTP 503 errors. Will keep trying them and
see if I can't get them at a different time of day, or with a browser by
hand.

Wayback, for a while, was not hosting any content but HTML. I think they've
expanded now.

Hows that going?

I've been having no success at contacting Chris Colefax, having tried both
the email addresses I had for him.
It would be a pity to lose his work. I think his site has been a popular
resource over the years.

Chris B.

Chris's site was so large that getting copies of it all was causing too
much traffic, and why Geocities kept stopping me. So, I just kept
banging at it, send wget back at least five times so far. Near as I can
tell, I have a copy of everything from the sites you listed. I am going
to run wget over everything one more time, to see if anything else shows
up as missing. Lots of stuff was duplicated, since the how-tos often
linked to scripts, and the scripts linked to galleries. I specifically
did not go through and back up the galleries. If I got them by accident,
from traveling links, then there isn't much I can do. Those I feel
certain we will not be authorized to redistribute, so I did not target them.

I haven't started going through it for stuff that can be redistributed,
that is going to take much longer. But, I will be moving it around to at
least 3 hard drives, several solid state memory cards, and at least a CD
and DVD. I may not be able to distribute any of it, but it won't be
lost. I am also chatting with friends, convincing them to learn POV-Ray,
so certain things may be reverse engineered, and updated to 3.6 or 3.7,
if they can not be distributed.
