Hi.
I have lots of data on ancient Roman ships, but lack the skills to shape the
hull in 3D.
Is there anyone interested to create a number of 3D models of ancient ships
based on my details? The ships would be full of details, interior and
exterior.
Greetings, lots of thanks,
Sven

Hello, did you tried on groups more dedicated to complex modeling? (I would
think blender, wings3d etc)

It might help if you explain what kind of data
you have and in which format it is represented.

I prefer POV-Ray. It is easier for me later to use and even expand these 3D
models. :-)

Sure! The data is partially existing as full side views of those ships
(hi-res JPG graphics), and partially as constructional details which I would
have to deliver as corrections or descriptions of the growing 3D model.
Wikipedia is using my reconstructions already, well, at least three or four
of them. But meanwhile, I have around fifty of those reconstructional
images, all in hi-res.
my target is to recreate the ancient Roman world with POV-Ray, at least the
coast lines and certain maritime events. A number of video clips might
follow, if I ever get a faster PC... ;-)
But the idea is a great one.

What really would be needed are cross-sections of the ship, for representing
the timber. Best program to model hulls would then be the (free version of
the) program DelftShip at http://www.delftship.net/
As an aside: I have my own 17th century Dutch trade ship started that way
(on hold unfortunately since 2004 :-( no time...)

On a lark I actually played with one of the simpler ones, and making some parts
of the shape was actually fairly easy in wings. However, I am not familiar
with such ships, and found that working from a side view only is very
difficult. Do you have any pictures from other angles?

Exactly! From experience with this kind of ship building, I can tell that
you absolutely need the so-called Timber Plan, which essentially shows
several cross-sections along the hull. Aditionally, info about keel length,
deck heights and curvatures, etc may help to visualize better the whole
structure and may even be essential for some parts. With that information
you can either work in (e.g.) Wings, or use the dedicated hull-building
program FreeShip as a start, and finish in Wings. Overall, building an
accurate ship takes weeks if not more, but the result can be very
satisfying.

Thanks for all your responses!
Yes, I could prepare some visual data of these ships. In fact, I will add
them to this posting here, or create a new one where I can attach images.
We could start with the smaller, simpler ones, before we reconstruct the
really large big Roman battle galleys. Those ships are just amazing!
Greetings,
Sven
