All this talk of rounded prisms made me think to post this experiment I 
did a few months ago.  It basically stacks multiple copies of a prism, 
scaled so they form a curved surface.  It ends up looking like a blob of 
paint or ink in the shape of the prism.  It works, after a fashion, but 
its limited by how shapes get scaled around the origin.  Also it needs 
quite a few prisms to look reasonably smooth, which slows down the render.
Anyway, I've put the scene file in p.b.s-f for anyone who's interested.
