I thought I'd let you know the status of the new web site since it's
been a while since we announced the IRTC revival project.
The coding is coming along well. I've captured the historical
information from the existing site and I'll have that available on the
new site. Working components include the main page, the history of
prior rounds, login, registration, voting and submitting. I'm working
out the details of the awarding process. I should be able to get the
code basically ready within a week or two.
I expect to get the HTML and CSS for the web site by mid May from our
graphics artist. After that, I'll need to spend a bit of time
re-working the rendering part of the code to match this HTML.
I'm hoping to get the IRTC site running under the new code in early
June. At that time, you should be able to view the prior rounds and
register yourself in the site. You can choose a user name separate from
your e-mail address which will remain private.
The IRTC Stills competition normally starts on an odd month so
July-August 2008 will likely be the first round in the new Stills
competition. The animation round will likely start Aug 15th and finish
October 15th.
I'm looking forward to getting everything running as quickly as possible.

This causes the animation round to be a two-month deal, whereas before
it was three months (it used to run from July to October). Was this an
intentional change?

My apologies - I intend to keep it as a three month round. We'll run it
from July to October.

Sounds very exciting!

One idea - could the topic be posted ahead of time and then we can resume
the normal schedule?
It could even be posted on the web site, not everyone may be reading the NG
or be subscribed to the mailing list.

I'm not the one responsible for coming up with the topic. In fact, this
brings up a bigger question - who is going to be an IRTC administrator?
Who is going to choose the topics, reject invalid submissions, verify
the awards, administer user accounts (reset passwords, etc).
I could volunteer to do it for a while, but we really need someone or a
small group to fill this role.
As for topics, I have a suggestion:
Topic: Re-birth
Description: Something coming back to life after a long hiatus
It seems appropriate :-)

You know you've been raytracing too long when...
you start thinking up your own "You know you've been raytracing too long
when..." sigs (I did).

I will be brief but not nearly so brief as Salvador Dali, who gave the
world's shortest speech. He said, "I will be so brief I am already
finished," then he sat down.
