As you likely know, the IRTC (Internet Ray Tracing Competition) has been
down for over a year now. I've been in discussions with Chris Cason for
a while now on how we can resurrect it and I'm happy to announce that
we've come up with a proposal.

I have assembled a small group of developers including myself and Randal
Schwartz who will volunteer our time to re-write the software in
Smalltalk using the Seaside web framework. In the process, we will try
to address some of the issues that led to the demise of the previous
system and add some flexibility to do more fun things with the site in
the future.

I do realize that while the IRTC was down, the TC-RTC started up. There
has been some discussion here that there's no need for two competitions.
Still, it's the IRTC that has the most visibility and the new site
should attract a lot more. We will import all of the previous years
competition results into the system and have them available for viewing
once the site is up.

If you have any questions or suggestions, you can send them to me at
dav### [at] simberoncom. Please include the text IRTC in the subject line.

I'll keep you advised as the development progresses.

David Buck

this is great! I don't really think it wasn't really any issue related to
software: it was just bunch of static html pages manually updated by the
admins after all.

Still, good news anyway. Hope Smalltalk and Seaside can make it look more
professional and make it more visible, plus turn site administration easier.

so, Randal got the pov bug, huh? ;)

I've always enjoyed *looking* at beautiful things. :)
Creating them is an entirely different matter.

I think that *is* an issue. Automation makes things much easier for
everyone and shouldn't stress the admins so much.

I solemnly promise to submit an entry to the first round of the
new IRTC. :)

Personally I think it ought to be manditory to submit atleast one IRTC entry
every year... Could you add a check into the POV code? ;-)

Rarius

PS... I still can't beleive I've been using POVRay (DBKTrace) for 10 years!

Ah, must be the same Randal Schwartz who said "I have my fingers
in far more pies than I can ever eat in a lifetime already." ;)

Warp's response is right on the money here. Nearly-full automation is very
important; I can vouch for that from seeing the IRTC run via the admin
list. Everytime you have to do something manually it adds the potential for
something to go wrong, plus requires someone to be available at the right
time to do it.
