Hello All,

It has been roughly ten years since I have posted to this forum (as ian 
mcdonald/IanM/ian), and a similarly long time since I have used POV-Ray. 
:'-(
I've been programming these last years, and haven't had sufficient time to 
meddle in my other interests.

I am glad to see old names still at work, and new ones as well, though I do 
wonder what happened to Tor Olav Kristensen, H.E. Day, Chris Huff, Nieminen 
Juha and Mick Hazelgrove. If any of you all are still out there, may your 
work live on and inspire new generations! ;-D

I am looking forward to v4.0 and generally getting back into the mix 


I have for now but one question, though it is multipartite:
Does any utility or plugin now exist which might allow proper export of 
POV-Ray geometry to, or POV-Ray to be called to render from, something such 
as Lightwave 9.2 or Houdini 9?

POV-Ray use primitives. Lightwave use meshes, and Houdini probably does the 
same, and don't use primitives.
To do that export, you need to convert all objects of the POV scene into meshes. 
There are no universal way to do that, especialy with isosurfaces.
Using Poseray, you can import into POV-Ray from those.

Glad to see that I am not the only povGeezer here. ;-)
We still have Gilles Tran, but I wonder what happened to Ken the Grand 
Link-Master?

I felt of course that due to my long absence I must complete the Obligatory 
Reflective Sphere Over Checkered Plane image once more..
And keeping true to my style I've made the fool thing in such a way as to 
take a few hours to render. ;-D

I swear I won't be happy until I'm running some insane multi-qubit quantum 
computer with a few hundred petabytes of storage and optical/biological/god 
knows what kind of ram. :-D

I will post the "result" in p.b.i when done. (it only took a few min. to 
write so don't expect much)

Hmm...well it would seem that at this point in time you are correct, though 
I do remember an old macro meant to translate pov-ray objects into meshes 
which could be exported..

Additionally, being a programmer I find it hard/difficult to accept that it 
is *completely*  impossible to export a great deal of pov-ray functionality 
into one or many programs, and this is something that I think I will at 
least experiment with once Lightwave arrives at my house.

Essentially POV SDL is very close in structure to most C-like programming 
languages, and given this, perhaps one could translate pov-sdl into some 
form of XML which could be further manipulated using XSL-FO to produce 
scenes or objects which could be loaded into another renderer, and 
vise-versa.

Seriously, a CSG is a CSG and a sphere is a sphere...
Most of the complication I forsee would be in the translation of materials, 
lighting models and particle effects, which would be less complicated with 
procedural applications like Houdini and those compatible with the Renderman 
interface, like BMRT.

So logistically I think this is at least feasible, and at most a serious 
PITA.

If we can write programs which translate chinese into english, java to 
c#/vb, and dwg to dgn, how hard could SDL conversion be?

I suppose I will find out! ;-D

It's possible in theory, it's just that no one has done much past a few
meshes.

It's quite a bit like C, the hardest parts, like the pre-processor commands.
Macros are parsed to replace multiple or even partial commands and objects.

POV doesn't provide a tesselation of objects, so the tesselation would
need to come from the conversion utility, because unfortunately
a sphere is not just a sphere in many other formats, but a bunch of
triangles, or nurbs.

for analysis.  The extinction of humanity should be imminent.

Why would that make you happy?  You'll still have to wait for your
