Happy New Year,
This posting is a follow-up to the discussions last year on setting up a
directory on povray.org for a collection of objects that anyone can freely
download and use.
The plan is to now start building this. I've mocked up a simple prototype
and Chris Cason has offered to set up an area on the server where we can
construct what we need and integrate it with the server-side database and
file system. We should also be getting a newsgroup where we can cover any
outstanding issues and manage the setup and longer term operations of this
facility.
You can help:
1. One or two people with DHTML/Javascript, PHP and/or SQL experience and
spare time over the next few weeks are needed to help with setup.
2. One or more people will be needed to oversee the various parts of the
collection once it's up and running. This means checking new submissions
regularly to make sure they're well indexed, clearly described and correctly
categorised, monitoring the newsgroup etc. This will need people with a few
spare hours each week over the long term. Reasonably good vocabulary skills,
but no particular technical skills are required for this (apart from an
understanding of POV-Ray obviously).
Any volunteers?
Regards,
Chris B.

I think I have sufficient knowledge to setup such an object
repository, but unfortunately my free time finishes today.
Some recommendations: When thinking bout DHTML/Javascript
nowadays AJAX comes to mind, and Prototype is the nicest on,
that was also recommended to me so far, especially with PHP:
http://prototype.conio.net/
Furthermore, Scriptaculous, which is based on that prototype
framework provides some nice Ajax features: http://script.aculo.us/
I'd bet the povray website already is data based, so one could also
stay with the technologies used there now.

I'd say besides some people having some administrative rights, that
could also be done in a community effort. Especially the correct
indexing of objects is a matter of taste. Instead of classical categorizations,
which never really work nice, I'd plead for the more and more used
tagging of the objects, which means labelling objects with many
keywords, on which it can be found. Take a look at http://.last.fm,
which uses this kind of tagging for music.
Bye, Olaf.

I'll offer to help. I'm more suited to the 2nd, as my Javascript skills
are pretty lame. If it's needed, though, I'll pull out the books and
help with the anything.

Sorry, it's http://last.fm Above link has a point too much.
Bye, Olaf.

Would everything be presumed public domain, or Creative Commons Attribution
license, or will you provide a filter for non-free objects (someone
mentioned tagging)?

Hi Greg,
When people submit things they'll need to accept that their work will be
distributed under the license covering the collection, in perpetuity, even
if that license changes in the future.
When the collection kicks-off, we'll use the CC-LGPL which allows royalty
free re-use, modification and re-distribution.
The license may change in the future if a more appropriate license becomes
available. If it does change, then anyone who downloads work under the
CC-LGPL will be able to choose whether to continue with that or move to the
new license.
There was a discussion about having a tag for objects not distributed under
the same license, but this would mean that users would have to keep track of
multiple licenses once they've downloaded objects. It was concluded that
there are plenty of other places where anyone not wishing to contribute
under the terms of the common license could post their work.
Regards,
Chris B.

I can help some here. (Experience: ~15yr SQL, ~10yr DHTML/Javascript, <5yr
PHP, off and on.) I've gone back to school (civil engineering), but
usually manage to make some time.

I can help here, as well, or wherever there is the greater need. I'm
particularly interested in textures, algorithmic objects, and animation.
(Experience dates back to POV-Ray--though not DKBTrace--on an Amiga 2500, I
can't remember when.)
I second the 'keyword tagging over categorizing' suggestion.

Hello, and sorry for the long absence, i took some long vacations away from
computers, but now i'm back. I guess i could help somewhat with PHP, but
i'm not really that keen with AJAX and heavy javascript usage...
