Given Dan has dropped in to say hello I thought I'd also mention another name
many of the old-timers are familiar with: Chris Young, who was my predecessor
as team leader until he retired in 1999.

Chris is currently in intensive care after some fairly serious surgery (I am
told he is due to be moved to a standard bed in the next day or so). I think
it would be nice if some of those who appreciate his contribution to POV-Ray,
and who are in the US, could send him a card or a box of chocolates or some
such while he's still there (if all goes well he will be out early next week)

No room number yet, but here's the address:

  Chris E. Young
  St. Vincent Hospital
  2001 West 86th Street
  Indianapolis, IN 46260

Very sorry to hear this about Chris - hope it's nothing too serious
(though being in ICU is never a good sign).

As far as I know he's expected to make a full recovery. Also, Jim Charter
contacted the hospital to ask if they had a gift shop that accepted remote
orders, and they responded as follows:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you for your inquiry. St.Vincent has a gift shop on site, and it
carries flowers. The phone number to reach them is 317-338-2100. There
are also several local flower stores that deliver to the hospital. Here
is their information:

Andrews Florists (0.3 miles from hospital) 317-875-3030
McNamara Florists (0.8 miles from hospital) 317-579-7900

Please feel free to contact us again for any future needs. If you would
prefer to contact us by telephone, please call the St.Vincent CARELine.
Representatives are available to take your call on Monday through Friday from
8:00 A.M. to 7 P.M

Local: (317) 338-2273
Toll Free: (888) 338-2273

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

plus he also came up with this link:

  http://www.stvincent.org/for/forvisitors/sendagreeting/default.htm

which allows a greeting to be sent to a patient.

Thanks for letting me know that, Chris. I'll have to get ahold of him. He
is an amazing guy. I think that I knew Chris for a couple of years before
I learned that he typed Compuserver emails, legal letters, documentation,
using a pencil in his mouth! And boy, did he ever type a LOT!

And to you, Chris Cason... my hat is definately off to you for where you
have taken POV-Ray. I think that you know that I had some serious
skepticism about your ambitions when you first joined us, but man... have
you ever put THOSE to rest! You've taken this project to heights never
dreamed of, and you've worked long and hard for it. I recall my doubts
when you first announced that you wanted to do a Windows interface. Today,
I wouldn't want to even run the sample files without the wonderful GUI that
interfaces with the engine, yet still allows the engine to remain
wonderfully multi-platform.

I also have to extend extreme compliments to whoever is responsible for the
fantastic help files! They're not only helpful, but filled with historic
background that even I didn't remember until I read it there. If only most
programs costing thousands, or even tens of thousands of dollars had such
documentation. Believe me... I know from personal experience. For the
past couple of years my job has been working with such software, and it has
been a constant frustration with the lack of proper documentation and
information.

How 'bout the rest of the ol' gang, Chris? Ever hear from any of them? I
know that DKB has checked in a couple of times. What about Dave Mason?
Remember his early animation program? And Bert Tykler, also from Fractint?
(btw, did you know that there are Wikipedia entries for both POV-Ray and
Fractint?)

My best wishes and deep hopes that the current situation will not endure,
and that health comes back as soon as anyhow possible! Hopefully Chris got a
laptop to make the best of his time there? Or at least, some good books! I
bought the other day a book of a kind i usually don't read - and felt in
deep passion about it!

This book is compiled out of the travel logs of Mr. Foster, the writer of
Captain James Cook, and tells the story of all the voyages with the eyes of
a person living at that time! An amazing book. I would recommend it (but in
English language for you guys, of course).

Again, my best wishes and hopes,

Sven
