Speaking of Terragen ...

I've got an aerospace vehicle that I have rendered and would like to place
it in a Terragen scene. What I've done in the past is to use Gimp to select
the image very carefully using the "Fuzzy" selected feature, etc. It
actually doesn't work so bad. I was wondering, though, if someone else has a
good technique to place a POV-ray object (such as an aircraft) into another
image (such as a Terragen image). I'll try and post my example in the
.images group this evening, just for grins.

You could paint the Terragen scene onto a background plane as an
image_map that exactly fills the screen. (The methods in
incdemo/screen.pov might possibly be useful for positioning). And create
your vehicle in front of it.

finish {ambient 1} to prevent shadows being cast onto the backdrop.

There was a recent thread somewhere dealing with how to preserve the
gamma.

You can use forester. It's made to plant POV trees, flowers, houses and other in a
treagen generated 
landscape. It convert the teragen terrain into a POV Ray mesh. Once it's done, you can
add any 
object you want, place the camera anywhere, move the "sun"...

I think your best shot is to make a "sky box".
In Terragen, place the camera centered in the scene.
Tip: Just enter the values manully for the camera position.
Adjust the camera so it has a 1/1 aspect ratio, i.e.
640x640 or whatever values you want.
Render one image in each direction, that is
0, 90, 180, -90. Just change the direction values
for the camera. Make sure that the camera target
stays at the same level for every direction.
Last, but not least, render one picture with
a vertical pitch. You don't need to render the
ground.
Tip: Name the images something like "Front", "Left",
"Back", and "Right".. or anything you like.. as long as you
can remember wich direction they represent.

Now you have 5 images.

Make a box that has equal sides but is very thin.
Copy the box 5 times so that you have a open cube
to the ground. Make sure that you place them so that
they don't have gaps. Map the different images to the different
boxes and make you own ground. You should turn the
illumination values for the images all the way up. You also need
to position your own lights according to the sun in Terragen.

I also usually places a ground fog in the scene with a value that is as
close as possible to the haze in the images. This makes a seamless
passing from your ground to the skybox.

The point of this setup is that if you have reflective or
refractive materials in the scene, they will treat the
background correctly.
