After writing this I went to work on the macro and found (not too quickly)
that the #read directive needs strings enclosed in quotes, which the dxf
does not supply. I guess i'll write a c program to convert the dxf directly
to a spline in an include file.

No, it needs comma-separated values. The values themselves can be
floating point numbers, vectors and strings.
