Sometimes I find a file with the extension .rca after rendering.

Anybody know what the rca file is for?

Only when you interrupt a render.

That's the radiosity sample cache, it is always written during a render 
using radiosity and is deleted when the render is finished.

Thanks, I suspected radiosity to be involved. Didn't make the link to 
interupted renders though.
