I don't think this is how things work. You can't assume people will read
your posting here and force them to opt-out. You will have to set-up an
opt-in system. You will have to get explicit permission from each author
to include his work into you compilations (same goes for your movie
project and your image library).

Okay... Now, you're just spamming the group....

From what I've seen, this "resource" isn't very useful. Everything that
can be found on it can also be found on the POV-Ray news servers. And it
seems to be a verbatim copy of each and every news message off of the
POV-Ray news servers... right down to the fact that it's stored in a
rar'd .news file.

If you were going to compile something:

1) At the very, very least take some effort in compiling it in a
useful/usable form. This is a no-effort job. congratulations, you used
stock software and search engine, dumped the contents of your news
reader and shoved it onto your web host. A no brainer.

2) At this level of mass verbatim copying, It would be nice if you had
*asked* the artists involved first. Personally, I don't really want a
third party archive of every single WIP and Picture posted because I had
a question. Granted, those posts do remain historically on the server
(with their context in tact, thank you.)

3) Check your legalities here, You're not permitted to duplicate the
content of the POV-Ray webservers or news servers in any way.

I think I would have been a bit more tolerent if you had taken the above
steps, asked for permission by POV-Ray's webmaster and put a little
effort into making it a browsable database of images past and present,
but as it stands now, I can do the same thing on google, and it get it
from the source, there, though Google does cache pages, and I could look
at the cached page, should I decided.

I think you probably had a novel idea, but didn't quite make the grade
on implementation. You've also exposed yourself to legal backlash,
should anyone decided to take action. This is not good for you.

Just my opinions/advice.

Heavily seconded, Michael.

I expect there may be some implications regarding a compilation copyright;
I remember years ago (the last time I participated in POV-Ray discussions,
in fact) on CompuServe, there were issues in another set of forums I
participated in where the company that owned a group of forums was
forbidden by a compilation copyright held by CompuServe from compiling
that information themselves. It's very possible that without even being
aware of it, Mr. Medina has violated the POV-Ray team's compilation
copyright by not seeking their permission to do this prior to implementing
it.

As an author, *I* choose the context in which my works appear. I've
looked at his site, and I'd much prefer my works to appear in a venue that
pays attention to details such as proper spelling and grammar. These
things are important to me, because I wouldn't want someone viewing my
works to think that I write that way; I take great pride in my ability to
usually construct a coherent sentence. As such, the context of my
renderings is important to me.

I don't expect any of my works to be the next Mona Lisa, but they are my
works, so I get to choose where they are put. Copyright law says to seek
permission first, not to copy and ask for forgiveness after the fact.

<sigh> I didn't want my first post to these groups to be a diatribe on
copyright. Oh well, I guess now it's too late. :-)

Jim

But note the domain used is the same cited on the article, just near
the end. No doubt this guy was hunting some victims here to shell his
properties... good finding, Shurakai!

No, i'm sure it's him. On his homepage You can bed for different lots in
different states. For sure You will never be able to build a house there,
due to bad conditions of the ground or what ever. Have a look for the
conditions You have to fullfill if You want to bed for such ground. If You
bed for such a lot You can be sure You will be the winner of this auction
and then You have to send him a check within 24 hours, like the woman from
the article did. And the article is written his homepage
www.JaimeMedina.com. The same page where he created that database, or
better to say the copy of this newsforum.
I just wonder why that guy suddenly turned his attention to POV-Ray. But an
idea is growing in my mind. On his page is written that he is looking for
partners for the preperation of educational movies and so on. Somehow i
think before becoming a partner of him i will have to send him a check of
maybe 1000$ within 24 hours, because he spend soooo many money and efforts
for the preperation of his Sun-Earth-Mars movie.
In my oppinion that guy is a professional impostor, earning money through
the stupidness of other people. But thats just my oppinion. Maybe i'm
wrong, maybe not. Who cares ?

Shu.

By the way: Jaime remove everything from me from Your page !!! Even when i'm
just a noob in POV-Ray and nobody cares about my posts, i don't want to
have my name written on You page !

Thanks Jaime (not Medina) :), i had the same bad feeling when i read that
article. The thing is, as more people visit his site, as higher is getting
the chance to catch a victim. Maybe thats the idea behind it.
Sometimes google is my best friend.

Shu.
