http://groups-beta.google.com/group/povray/
I don't know exactly what the benefits will be over existing services like
this one. I only know that when I saw google was offering groups, I knew I
wanted to grab this word as a group before anyone else did.
If someone were to have a reputatable use for this group, please join and
then I'd be very inclined to hand over the "manager" keys to an active
particpant there.

If you mean what's the benefit of google.groups in general there are two
aspects:
1. benefit from google point of view
2. benefit from user point of view
ad. 1.
monopoling browsing means ruling the world, gathering money, stock market,
easy for spying by secret agencies
ad. 2.
having news, chat, webforums, email lists and email account in single
interface under easy url makes computers world and network more and more
userfriendly
Take your favourite type of benefit :-)

It is probably a good idea to have grabbed the group name to pick up anyone
searching there for povray news groups.
I'd recommend posting a 'Read this first' message to tell people where the
various news.povray.org groups can be found.
(and maybe something under the 'About this group' heading)
Otherwise there's a risk that newbies may think that the povray community is
unfriendly or in decline.

Google playing with the mess they have created now, google isn't an
option anymore, navigation to any group is only a mess. Took them out
of my bookmarks, won't be going back.

I agree with you on all points. I could not have put it better.
