Anyone else see this behavior in the editor that comes
with the Win 3.6.1 (3.6.1.id8.win32)? It doesn't happen
in Pov 3.5. I'm using Win98.
type in some text:
Today
and save it so the editor sets the clean state.
now change a character: the letter 'd' by moving the caret in front of
the letter 'd' then press the delete key then press the letter 'g'
The editor should know the text is "dirty" and the "Save" button should
be active. Now click on the "Save" button.
Now undo twice (Ctrl+Z) which undoes the character and the deletion and
the letter 'd' should reappear.
Now delete the 'd' again then press the letter 'q' and now the "Save"
button is inactive, but it should be active.

Obviously this problem is because the letter q looks quite like a g, so
when the editor quickly scans the text to see if it has changed, it
doesn't notice that there is a q there instead of a g. Changing it to a
x or something as distinctive should work.

Wow! Maybe you're right! I'm almost afraid to see the
confusion of l and 1 and 0 and O and the list is going
to be enormous! You get started, Ok?

Gee.. That is amazing, I didn't know the editor for POVRay had a OCR
system built in... This is pure nonsense. The two make 'look' the same
visibly, but computer programs don't get by what something 'looks like',
they deal with numbers. Not sure what is going on here, but it definitely
isn't a result of two letters looking the same visually.

The logical conclusion being that it was a joke. =)

Daniel's response that is, not the editor's behavior :^)

Well... yes, of course. Everyone knows each letter is made up of
itsy-bitsy dots. The editor uses Braille - BCR ;)

Well.. As soon as you manage to find a way to convey an intent to be
humorous through plain text....

Well, I thought that making such a plainly nonsensical comment was a bit
of a clue. If you've been paying sufficient attention, you know I'm a
Computer Science student, thus unlikely to really believe that what I
said is true.
I used to have a problem making jokes like that, because I didn't like
people believing that I'm stupid. I suppose I must have mellowed a bit,
because I make the 'how stupid is this opinion' joke quite frequently
now. I still find it hard to get the proper balance between plausibility
and jokiness, but I think in this case I got it exactly right. I wasn't
meaning to take the mick out of you, but if one person takes it
seriously and everyone else realises it's a joke, I think that means the
joke had the right amount of subtlety. I suppose it's a bit like a
well-constructed troll, which will be subtle enough that everybody but
one will realise that it's not a serious opinion, and the one who is so
outraged they feel they need to comment ends up with egg on their face
(in the case of a troll, probably looking as if they don't know what
they're talking about as well).
Perhaps it is a bad sign that there are still enough stupid (or
non-computer-literate) people that one might accept that someone
actually believes something so stupid; maybe it is a good sign that the
so-called experts are expert enough to realise implausibility when they
see it. In either case, any interpretation is after the fact and my
little joke was always intended to be just that.
Grinning to himself,
Daniel
