New version of POV-Ray available? (Message 1 to 10 of 10)

I was rendering a long file and when I connected to Internet, I saw (for
first time) the message given by "Check for new versions" option.

Do you recommend me to download it? It usually takes very long (I have 56K
dial-up connection).

Change list:
http://www.povray.org/download/features/3.6.1.php?changelist=true&oldver=3.
6.0

3.5 already is a really good piece of software.
Actually it seems to be a bit more stable than 3.6, but 3.6 is much better
with photons for example.

If you want to do really cool stuff, all versions of pov-ray will be fine.
If you want to do the latest things you can use 3.6. For experimental stuff
try megapov :)

I have 3.6. I needed that because of a bug in the sphere_sweep.

I'm asking if I should download 3.6.1.

3.6.1 fixed some rather unpleasant bugs in the program. We always encourage
people to use the latest version if at all possible. People using older versions who
complain about problems often are citing bugs that have already been fixed in
later versions.

I believe the real point of the question was: "Are the changes from
3.6.0 to 3.6.1 really worth the time it will take to download 9.7MB
with a 56K modem?". I don't know, but this got me wondering if
perhaps the povray website should also offer incremental patches to
make for smaller downloads for bugfixes upgrades. What do you think?

There were changes to the documentation, as such, you need the whole
download because the docs are a major part of the package. And the binary
you would need anyway as well. The sample scenes are not that much.

And yes, getting a bug fix release is a good idea, even over a 56K modem it
is half an hour well spend downloading compared to having to waste hours
rendering and find there was a bug that made it look odd...

When I said "incremental patch", I didn't refer only to the
executable. There are tools to create a small patch file from a
directory tree and generate an executable for easy upgrade (for
example PatchWise Free: http://www.hanmen.com/ ).

What I don't know is the number of people that would be concerned
and if it would create more support requests than having people who
go on using the old version and keep stumbling on the same bugs...

yet :P

Yes, and I explicitly said that you would need the documentation updates and
the application and that the (mostly unchanged) scenes do not take that much
space. I thought it would be obvious this implies that then the overall
size of such a patch would not be significantly less than the full download
as POV-Ray consists only of the application, the documentation and the
scenes.

I rather doubt that there were megabytes worth of changes in the
documentation for a release that only increments the last number in
the version string (in particular, the images, drawings and so on are
probably much the same and account for a lot of space). Since the
tools I refer to are able to keep only the differences for each file,
they should be able to get good results even though the documentation
is in a single file.

I can't find 3.6.0 anymore so I can't run the test myself, but it
might be interesting to at least give it a try rather than dismissing
the idea out of hand...

		Jerome

PS: btw, guess what's the biggest directory in the installation? I
know, it compresses extremely well and so it's not much to download,
but still I find it ironic...
